Meeting with Daniel Wilkinson as Human Rights Watch

On March 7th, 2014, our whole group attended a meeting with Daniel Wilkinson from Human Rights Watch. We went to the Human Rights Watch offices in the Empire State Building to meet with him. The Human Rights Watch organization works on revealing violations of human rights to the governments of their countries. They work for human rights all around the world. During our talk with him, he taught us about the differences from the gun laws in our country to gun laws in South America and other countries. We also talked about how guns are not only a danger to people’s lives, but can lead to the success of other crimes, such as drug dealing. He also talked to us about the human right to life and how when guns take lives away, the human right to life, and American’s civil right to own guns, conflict. This was a main argument that was used in our teach-in workshop, and was a very important point.

My name is Nolan and I am a student at LREI a private school in Greenwich Village in Manhattan. My social justice topic is war and violence, specifically inner city violence and gang violence. I am passionate about this topic because in certain parts of the city I live in, New York City, there is violence and gang violence.
