Interview With Former Iraq Veteran at Intersections

On January 15 our group went to meet with Rebecca Summers, a former Iraq veteran. At first sight Rebecca Summers wasn’t what we all expected. She looked completely ‘normal’ and didn’t look like she had just gotten back from war 9 months ago. This further made me indulge myself in this conversation. During our conversation we talked about many different things like stereotypes about veterans such as how people picture veterans of being grumpy, moody, old and male. This made our group really think about this issue and things related to it. Another topic that we spent a lot of time on was PTSD. This topic included topics about how in war soldiers treat each other like brothers and family and when they return, they are often left in lonleyness and that can lead to issues such as PTSD. For those of up you who don’t know,PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a mental disorder that comes after a Traumatic event. Our conversation lasted about 1 and a half hours and was very educating.

I am an 8th grader at LREI . I am part of the War an Violence group A and we are working on issues with veterans such as finding jobs and healthcare. I am really looking forward to this project and I cant wait to see if we can make a difference.
