This is at the set at ABC with Tamar Gargle

On Monday, January 13th, we visited Tamar Gargle at ABC. We left school at 11:00 so we could get there at 11:30. When we got there, Tamar gave us a tour. First, we saw a woman who designed the title pages for news shows. She showed us her workspace and how she had to animate certain things. She showed us a couple of the title pages she had been working on. Then we saw someone who worked on putting the pictures of actors for the oscars up. She told us how she had to lighten and darken pictures sometimes so you could see them better. Another really cool thing that we saw was how to make 3D clips. Sometimes if there’s a new story that happens later in the day, there isn’t enough time to get footage for the 5 o’clock news. So instead, they find out what happened from sources and then have multiple people helping to create a short 3D video to explain to everyone what went on.

This fieldwork was especially interesting because we sort of got to see the “other side” of how women are portrayed in the media. Tamar told us that at ABC News, they try to be as real as possible. They don’t retouch women to look prettier. The most they will do is lighten or darken a picture so that it’s easier to see. From this experience, I learned that there are some places that are less into changing the way women look and only portraying them to look beautiful and photoshopped.
