Interview with Richard Aborn 12/10/13

Richard Aborn is the president of the Citizens Crime Commission of New York, an organization that deals with crime reduction in the streets of New York, and strengthen the criminal justice system of New York. The goal of this fieldwork was to get information from someone who’s job is dealing with crime in New York. We knew that Richard would have a lot new of information for us, because of his personal experience of working with the Citizens Crime Commission on a daily basis. One interesting point that came up during the interview was the system in which there are strict gun laws in certain states, and not so strict laws in other states. Illegal gun dealers would travel to a nearby state and collect guns and bring them back to the states with strict gun laws and sell them on the streets. This raised many questions for me. For example, are there any gun control laws on the federal level? If so how many are there and what do they do?  From here we are going to use some contacts we got from the interview and they might answer questions that came up in this fieldwork. Mr. Aborn had many people he worked with that we can contact and will be very useful for us moving on.

My name is Nolan and I am a student at LREI a private school in Greenwich Village in Manhattan. My social justice topic is war and violence, specifically inner city violence and gang violence. I am passionate about this topic because in certain parts of the city I live in, New York City, there is violence and gang violence.
