Our Trip to Poughkeepsie

On November 16th my group, which is focusing on work against gun violence, drove to Poughkeepsie to meet with Donna Dees and Mothers Against Gun Violence to march across the Hudson River to support anti-gun violence legislation. We learned many people’s views on gun laws and violence. This had an impact on the way I see the different arguments on gun violence. We got the chance to meet many experts in the field including people from sandy hook. We went to learn from different masters of the field about our subject. We witnessed moving speeches and a great sense of community.

When we got there we immediately saw over one hundred people watching a man giving a tearful speech. We protested gun violence and held signs protesting pro-gun laws. We also got the opportunity to witness a pro NRA protester with an pro-gun protester. The pro-gun man argued that having a gun would stop the violence because than people could defend themselves and the anti-gun women argued that less guns would result in less gun violence. For the Teach In, I want to record how many arguments there are surrounding this subject. Also I want to remember how many people stood up to violence. In this trip I learned the pure magnitude of the problem and how many people it effected. This was a great trip and I learned so much. Also someone we met at the march invited us to talk at City Hall.

We are a social justice group working to end gun violence in America. We are currently focusing on gang violence in inner city communities in around our area. We have met with many specialists in the field and doing field works, in which we work in the field to earn real hands-on experience.
