Interview with David Winter, 11/26/2013

On Tuesday November 26, 2013, my group and I went to the Intrepid Museum to interview David Winter. David Winter works in an organization called the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. This organization raises money to build treatment centers that help veterans with Post-Traumatic-Stress Disorder (PTSD). The Intrepid organization already made 3 treatment centers, two that are helping veterans today and one being built. The goal of our interview was to get to meet the organization and see if we could contact other organizations that we could volunteer in. David told us of other organizations that also helped veterans. This interview was very useful in many ways. One of the most interesting quotations from the interview was this, “Sometimes specially after a long time after a war you tend to forget, what the veterans have done. But if you’ve been injured in a war, you live with that injury for the rest of your life.” This shows why this topic is so hidden from the media but why it is also very important to us. Another point David brought up was that veterans volunteered to help our country. So they should receive the help they need for making such a choice. Veterans helped make this country what it is facing the fear of their deaths, their friend’s death and injury, mental and physical. A way to see for your self the organizations mission and ideas is by visiting http://www.makeitvisible.org/mission.html.

I am an 8th grader in LREI. As I was reading the New York Times one day I saw an article raising awareness about veterans and how the health and labor departments treated them once they returned. The article surprised me and I decided to do some backup research. The facts spoke for themselves and I decided that this unfairness could not happen to our heroes. I am looking to shine a light on the veterans we honor but don't help.
