Reflection:

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

Zoe Buckman grew up in Hackney, East London, England in the 1980’s/90’s. As she gradually created more and more pieces of artwork, she unintentionally became a visual activist for woman’s rights. She was just creating from her experience, as a mother, and as someone who’s had to abort a child. She taught us how pro-life people look at the world through such a binary view. “Either you want to be a mom and you love kids or you hate kids and you want to kill babies and have abortions.” It isn’t like that in the slightest. Did you know that in the UK, women already have access to abortion. They have had access to abortion care her “whole life.”They even offer free counseling afterwords. Meanwhile, our country is still debating on whether abortion is health care and is essential. Crazy. We have people who are trying to guilt out mothers in to go through with a pregnancy, guard clinics, and persuade people into not choosing to abort. The fact is no one wins when people do this, the parent doesn’t win the kid doesn’t win and the community doesn’t win. So why do we still face this issue?
