Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Ushma Upadhyay

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

Reflection:

What I did:

What I learned:

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

Through the interview, I learned about Ushma Upadhyay’s research on abortion access. People tend to not count her research and stats as medical research, and she said that she doesn’t have the same funding as other departments. Specifically about abortion access in poverty, I learned about the difficulties women have to go through trying to pay for abortions out of pocket, because most clinics do not allow insurance. Abortions can cost up to 14,000 dollars the longer you wait, and medication abortions can cost up to 1,000 dollars. Ushma goals for abortion access in the future is that medication abortions will be easily accessed, to reduce travel, etc.
