Gun Violence March in Poughkeepsie 11/16/13

After our interview with Donna Dees, she invited us to a gun violence march located in Poughkeepsie, New York. It was a march supporting stricter gun laws throughout the US. The goal of this fieldwork was to actually get involved in and support the movement for stricter gun laws instead of only conducting interviews about it. We were also looking to meet people and get some more people to contact. Something that was interesting was that there were many people from Sandy Hook, where the Sandy Hook shooting took place, at this march. This raised another question for me: People from communities affected by gun violence are more involved in the gun violence world. That means people who have not been effected by gun violence in some way are not involved in trying to prevent it. This just shows how people need to be educated on this topic, to grow the force to stop gun violence. Something else that was interesting at this march was that there were people from organizations that supported guns at the march. They obviously were not in favor of this march for stricter gun laws, but they were there to voice their opinion. They called themselves “a 2nd amendment protection organization”, which is a completely valid thing to fight for, but I think they were going about it the wrong way by coming to a march filled with people who want to fight for less guns. I learned that even though we are young, people are excited to see kids getting involved in the world of social justice. I learned this because people during the march were excited to see us at this march and congratulated us on getting involved. The next step for us is keeping in contact with the people we met there and organizing fieldworks from there.

My name is Nolan and I am a student at LREI a private school in Greenwich Village in Manhattan. My social justice topic is war and violence, specifically inner city violence and gang violence. I am passionate about this topic because in certain parts of the city I live in, New York City, there is violence and gang violence.
