Interview with Principle Hannah Kehn

Name: Daniel Olusheki Social Justice Group: Poverty and Education Date of Fieldwork: February 9, 2021 Person (people) with whom you met and their title(s) & Name of Organization: Hannah Kehn, Principle of New Visions Type of Fieldwork: Interview Reflection: What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

Her school is a tier one funded school, which means they have a state curriculum, and provides federal money per-person. If she had enough money, should wouldn’t have the teacher union helping her. The Union’s name is the UFT, aka the United Federation of Teachers, and they represent many schools in NYC. I think this is because Teacher Unions are protesting the idea of in-person schooling, and it’s necessary for education. All the information those students were supposed to learn were lost, because there isn’t enough time to teach them.

The schools and Teacher Unions go back and forth about getting children back into school. Many children from her school are poorer and don’t have the money to get good wifi for online schooling. Covid has negatively affected her school in many ways. There’s not a plan for the children who don’t have any of this information they were supposed to learn this year, and they don’t have time to make it up.
