Interview with Jon Roure at CollegeBound Initiative

Name: Rafaella Thakur Greene

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019, Education: Dropping Out

Date of Fieldwork: December 7, 2018

Name of Organization: CollegeBound Initiative

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Jon Roure, Senior Managing Director

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We went to the CollegeBound Initiative office and we interviewed Jon Roure. We met and took pictures with some of his team. He provided us with lots of helpful and valuable information on our topic. He also gave us helpful resources for data and more information.

What I learned:

We learned that before their program 80% or more of students qualified for free or reduced lunch (used to be more) now those students children are better off because of their program. Their kids will not be eligible for reduced or free lunch because they are making more money due to their education. Their program is truly effective. They target students instead of parents and they help them get exactly what they need in order to go to college. College really affects people’s quality of life.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that it is extremely important to listen to students to be able to help them. Usually, students know exactly what they need to succeed. That is part of the reason that kids drop out of high school, people don’t listen to them and they don’t help them. Another thing that is really important is for students to want to succeed and want to be better. If a student doesn’t want to succeed they won’t.
