Michelle Fine Interview

Name: Ana Vieira-Gerbracht

Social Justice Group: Education: Dropping Out

Date of Fieldwork: November 3, 2018

Name of Organization:

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Michelle Fine, expert and author

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

we went to the CUNY building, and did an interview with Michelle Fine, where we talked about education in poverty, and how dropping out continues the cycle of poverty.

What I learned:

I learned how people who drop out of high school are more “pushed out” because of how the system is. the public education is made to hold a lot less children than there are in schools. the teachers don’t push the kids to go an, causing them to be pushed out.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

people have to care about each other in order for change to happen. it is going to take a lot of people to change how the education system works and we have to start now.
