Social Justice Group: Women: Maternal Health

Date of Fieldwork: November 30, 2018

Name of Organization: Planned Parenthood, Chakshu Patel

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Chakshu Patel

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

During this fieldwork, we interviewed a representative of Planned Parenthood, Chakshu Patel. Ms. Patel, is the vice president, and strategy office at Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

What I learned:

During this interview, we learned that most teens that come into planned parenthood pregnant and scared, this starts way ahead with lack of sexual education in schools. We also learned that Planned Parenthood is a non-judgemental care center, where everyone should feel confident in their own skin. Chakshu Patel, has a son in the second grade in LREI, she has been interested in womxn’s rights since college, and has continued to ever since.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

During this I learned about how hard the Planned Parenthood people work; they have been threatened to be defunded, and have gotten bomb threats. Most of this is caused from outsiders not knowing about the patients’ causes, and the mothers. Those who threaten have no idea what’s going on in the patients’ lives and just all Planned Parenthood is about abortion, which is only a tiny part of what they provide.
