Marching for DACA: NYC Women’s March 2018

Name: Henry Toll

Social Justice Group: DACA and Immigration

Date of Fieldwork: January 20, 2018

Name of Organization: NA – Rally

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: A lot of LREI students and their parents

Type of Fieldwork: Direct Action

What I did:

My mom and I went to the 2018 Women’s march in NYC on the 20th of January. We marched with LREI for a hour, then walked outside of the march and watched it. We took a ton of photos and chanted about DACA.

What I learned:

The only thing that really inspired me/taught me about Immigration was how many sign about DACA their were. I saw signs that said things like, we are all Immigrants and DACA = Lives. It is incredible to see how many people support DACA in NYC. The other big thing was seeing the police support DACA. I saw one police man say, he supported DACA and nod to a guy holding a DACA = Lives sign. This shows that the police force doesn’t want to have to raid homes and detain people.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned about how people will stand up for Immigrants, because many DACA members want to go to marches, but cant. Because if they do and get arrested, they would lose DACA status and be deported. This shows people are standing up for them and being true social justice warriors.
