Interview With Moises Kaufman, 11/16/16

On November 16th, our LGBTQ Social Justice group watched Moises Kaufman speak from 7-8pm. Moises Kaufman wrote The Laramie Project (the play was saw a week earlier). He spoke about what inspired him to write the play, and about his experience interviewing people all over Laramie, Wyoming. Moises talked about The Laramie Project’s first performance, and how it affected the audience. What struck me the most was when Moises shared how he felt when when he realized that Matthew Shepard never had the chance to love another man. After the speech was over, my group had the chance to interview him. Moises told us that our teach-ins might change children’s lives. This struck me and my group very much. It was the first time we realized that teaching children going through some of the toughest times of their lives could give them hope. We could teach kids that it is alright to say, “this is me.” This has inspired me and my group members to continue learning as much as we can and hopefully make a difference.
