Interview with inventor and CEO of GoldieBlox Debbie Sterling

Debbie Sterling is the inventor and CEO of toy company Goldie Blox and we had the amazing opportunity to conduct an interview with her on how exactly her idea came to light and what she hoped to achieve by creating this company. Her idea was to create a toy company that helped young girls get in touch with there engineer and inventive side. On their website it states, “she gave engineering a try during her freshman year at Stanford. Four years later, she graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering / Product Design. Bothered by how few women there were in her program, Debbie became obsessed with the notion of “disrupting the pink aisle” with a toy that would introduce girls to the joy of engineering at a young age”. She wanted to create a toy that didn’t fit the standard little girl toy (pink, princess-like, and “girly”). So, she created Goldie Blox, an engineering toy for girls.

Though she may not have been fighting for our cause exactly (the portrayal of women in the media), it is so important to realize that women aren’t the majority in big industries and topics like engineering. We need to show those who are going to grow up to potentially become part of these huge careers that they can do it! Being a women, or even a young girl, shouldn’t limit you to staying in the lines and restrict you from doing what you want. I learned from Debbie Sterling that if we put our minds to something and fight off all the things holding us back, and its sad but in a lot of cases it is gender, we can really achieve what we’re striving for.

Nubia Celis-Etienne

My name is Nubia Celis-Etienne and I am currently attending 8th grade at LREI, Little Red Schoolhouse and Elisabeth Irwin High School, in New York City. The social justice topic my group, Jane, Katie, Kate, Kellin, and I, are focusing and dealing with is the portrayal of women in social media. We are all really passionate about this topic, and I believe that the way people see women in the media, especially in today's time, is either as weak and incapable, edited with Photoshop, or over sexualized and. This topic relates to girls like me, especially in my age group, because we grow up seeing these impossible standards of perfection in the media and many strive to achieve those looks and end up being scarred knowing they can never look like those enhanced models on TV. With my group, we strive to do as much as we can to show the world and those girls like us that perfection is an illusion. We want to show everyone what a real women looks like, without any retouching or photoshopping.
