Washington Square Park Questions

Our group wanted to not only to hear the perspective and opinions on our topic from experts, but the average person as well. We went to Washington Square park to ask people quick questions on child abuse and inform them about statistics in the United States. This was a very interesting experience and the combination of different people’s personalities and lives were definitely expressed in their answers. Our questions were simple, such as “What is child abuse?” “What would you do if you witnessed or heard about abuse?” Their answers and responses ranged from long, detailed, and passionate answers to “child abuse is the abuse of a child.” After we were done asking them questions we would give them a page of statistics and facts about child abuse in the United States. This was a very interesting experience and honestly caused us to be very nervous. Some people are not very friendly and we knew to expect people not wanting to respond. Although we were turned down a few times we tried not to take it personally. Overall, I was very interested in what people had to say and I believe it really did benefit our group’s research. We now have perspectives of other people and may even make a collage of our research to improve our teach in. We plan to go back and ask more people.

My name is Sarah and I am an Eighth grader at Little Red School House Elisabeth Irwin. Preventing child abuse along with helping people who have experienced it is something that I have always been very interested in. I passionately believe that no one should feel unsafe in places that should provide comfort, such as home or school. My group is working hard to make a change so that ones own anger and sadness is not inflicted on children.
