Interview With Bob Gangi

On November 12, 2014, my group and I met with Bob Gangi, the head Organizer of PROP. PROP is the Police Reform Organizing Project, this is a non-profit organization that’s mission is to stop the current ineffective, unjust, discriminatory, and racially biased practices of the NYPD. They’re also trying to stop abusive conduct and treatment and to implement local problem solving measures that strengthen communities and police relationships while reducing crime. We visited him at his current workplace, the Neighborhood Housing Service on Broadway and W36th street in Times Square. Their office consisted of an I tire floor with many cubicles. While there, we interviewed him about what his organization does, why he founded PROP, and his life as a social activist for change. He told us about PROP’s work and how his goal is to stop bad policing and mend good community, police relations. Him and his Colleagues go to hearings and watch to gain information that they can use. During the court visits they sit-in record the relevant information about each case. Their “court monitoring” also includes speaking with lawyers and defendants. One thing that he offered us is to help by using social media to spread awareness about the problem and their organization. This was our first time visiting an organization for this project and it was very nice to see how they run it and passionate everyone is. We also got to meat with the Head Project Organizer, Ms. Ashley Coneys, the educational workshop leader for PROP. When we met her, she shared a lot of information about the workshops that she did and we were eventually able to schedule a workshop for our grade to help them learn about the problem that we are facing and the goal of organizations like PROP.
