Interview with Lauren Mucciolo 11/24/14

When we contacted Lauren Mucciolo, the producer of “Poor Kids” she was very eager to help us learn more about our topic. We found out about her through Momii. She told us that we should watch the movie and try to contact either the director or producer. When we did, Lauren agreed to come to LREI and so we could interview her. My group and I came up with different questions to ask about the movie and the making of it.

The questions we asked were about the movie but we also had a few that were related to what happened to the three families who were featured in the movie. Mucciolo explained that they had accomplished their goals (one family wanted to move to Florida) or were still working towards them. She also explain that after the movie was released, there was a donating system that allowed people to give money to those three families. When she told us this I thought it was very powerful because that way, the people donating could be sure that their money was going exactly where they wanted it to go. Even though these dontations are only helping a couple of families, they’re taking it just one step at a time.

She also explained that the movie was shot by only two people, herself and the director. I found this very impressing because everything that was filmed was very personal. I think this made the movie a lot more powerful than it already was because it had that feeling that it was all real. She then asked us about what we were doing and how it connected to the movie. We explained our topic (Women and Children in Poverty) and how so much of the movie was tied to the work we are doing. This was a very powerful interview and I felt like I learned a lot of new and useful things about my Social Justice topic.

My group and I feel very passionately about this topic and want to help as much as we can. I also want to understand more about the topic and how we can help.
