On December 5, my group and I went to the IFC theatre to watch a very informative documentary about child neglect.I think that this film really benefited our research. This was not from the child’s perspective, but the parents. We learned how difficult it is to backtrack in life. If a parent loses custody of their child, it is an extremely complicated and problematic process to get them back.  In this film, it showed two different situations. One man had a problem with hard drugs, After calling the services on his ex-wife, they found himself not able to raise his daughter as well. He really did love his child, she was the thing that kept him going. However, he kept finding himself in a cycle of drugs, alcohol, and gambling. Throughout the movie, he worked very hard to improve himself and prove that he is worthy of raising his own child. In the end, he was successful and him, his girlfriend, and his daughter lived a happy life together. The other story was of a young girl who had two children with her previous boyfriend and was pregnant with her current boyfriend. When she first had her children, she was very overwhelmed and did not act like a proper mother to her children. She would simply drop them off at her mother’s house and go out to party. She was then charged for neglecting her children. Having a child and attempting to get her two children back was very complicated. In the end, she did have custody of her new-born. However, the battle for her older children continued. It was very interesting seeing two stories and following their lives. It was a very different perspective than I have seen or heard before. It showed me that abuse is not always obvious, nor intentional. After, some of us stayed for a question and answer session about the film. I thought that this was a great fieldwork because it taught us the “other side” of child abuse.

My name is Sarah and I am an Eighth grader at Little Red School House Elisabeth Irwin. Preventing child abuse along with helping people who have experienced it is something that I have always been very interested in. I passionately believe that no one should feel unsafe in places that should provide comfort, such as home or school. My group is working hard to make a change so that ones own anger and sadness is not inflicted on children.
