The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner

IMG_7888The book I’m reviewing is The King of Attolia, by Megan Whalen Turner. The main character is Costis, one of the king’s guards. The setting is in the Palace of Attolia. This diorama shows the most important part of the book. When assassins from Sounis, ( a rival country with Attolia,) get into the garden where the king is walking. Why the King only has one arm is because the queen of Attolia. She chopped it off in an earlier book to punish him for stealing something from her.

What happens is that the king takes a sword away from one of the three assassins and kills all of them. The assassins released the hunting dogs from their cage and that got the guards to go to the dogs, not the king. Why these people are trying to kill the king is because people don’t like that the king is from Eddis ( another rival country,) and is now the king of Attolia.

Some words to describe Costis are aggressive and loyal. Why he is aggressive is because when he gets angry he gets very aggressive. Another reason why Costis is aggressive is because he punched the king. Why Costis is loyal is because he always is on schedule to be with the king even though he doesn’t like him. I would rate this book four and three quarters out of five stars.

The Magic Faraway Tree, By Enid Blyton

39-The-Magic-Faraway-Tree_EL_14nov12_pr_btIf you like magic and adventure you should read The Magic Faraway Tree. The name of the main characters are Joe, Beth, Frannie and Moonface. Beth is the most sensible, friendly and giving. Joe is most careful, adventurous and clever. Frannie is the youngest in age of all of them and she cries a lot and Moonface takes a lot, he has a sweet tooth but can also be clever. They live in the countryside and there is a wood right next to their house. They live on top of a small hill.

They go to different lands and in every land there is a problem like in the land of take-all-you-want Moonface gets so interested in a big quilt that he forgets to watch the hole that leads back down the tree and they get stuck in the land. The way they get up the tree is they climb up the tree and then once they get up the tree there is a hole at the top that leads to a land but you have to go up and then come down quickly because if you don’t get down you get stuck up there forever. The conflict of this book is to get in and out before the land moves.

I think this is one of the best books I have read in a long time besides the Harry Potter series I would recommend this book to people who are not picky with books. Some people (like me) would think that the beginning of the book is boring and put it down and pick up another book.

I am going to give you a tip,  you must read farther because the middle of the story is more interesting. I would give my book 500 stars! Just kidding, I will give it ✬✬✬✬✬ stars.

Skeleton Creek, by Patrick Carman

skeletoncreekMy review I will talk about is called Skeleton Creek by Patrick Carman. The story is about two friends a boy named Ryan and a girl named Sarah. The story takes place in Skeleton Creek. The main problem is that there are a lot of scary and weird things happening in Skeleton Creek. Ryan and Sarah are trying to find out who is behind all of these ghostly events.

Sarah goes to the Dredge which is a big building that someone had died in and now there is a ghost who haunts it. Sarah finds the ghost and gets so scared that she runs away. She takes videos and e-mails it to Ryan while he writes it in his journal. The whole book is written like it is Ryan’s journal. When Ryan was watching Sarah’s video he saw a message in the background and it said “Are you the alchemist?” An alchemist is like a potion maker. Sarah decided to go back to The Dredge to figure out more clues using a video camera. She then returns to the dredge with Ryan a second time to find even more clues. Ryan is brave because he was not allowed to talk to Sarah on a phone or ever, because she keeps going back to the Dredge.  Ryan is also secretive because he has been talking to Sarah for so long and the parents don’t even know.

Skeleton Creek is my favorite book because it is scary and exciting. You also get to go on the computer and watch videos that relate to the story being told. I rate this book a whopping FIVE STARS!!! It is my favorite book EVER!

Catching Fire By Suzanne Collins

(:WARNING DON’T READ THIS REVIEW IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE FIRST BOOK:)

Catching Fire is the sequel to The Hunger Games and is by Suzanne Collins. It is about a place called Panem with a place called the Capitol and 12 (or maybe 13) districts. The hunger games is when a male and a female gets reaped from their district to fight each other to the death and the people who got reaped from the other districts. The reaped people are called tributes. Being reaped means you get picked to be in the hunger games. The tributes from district 12 in the 74th hunger games is Peeta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen. They’re mentor for the games is Haymitch Abernathy. Katniss’s best friend who despises the Capitol is named Gale Hawthorne. Peeta and Katniss win the hunger games and become victors. they are also about to become mentors when the Quarter Quell happens. The Quarter Quell is a special hunger games that happens every 25 years. For the 75th hunger games the victors are to be reaped from their district and fight. Now Katniss’s chances of surviving are even slimmer. When you are reading the book you will uncover all different secret/surprise characters. When Peeta and Katniss are reaped again they hear hints of rebellion spreading around Panem. I enjoyed the book dearly because I simply just could not put it down.

I would rate it 1 stars for people who cannot handle gruesome scenes. And 5 stars for people who can handle gruesome scenes and understand every single thing that is happening on the page. My favorite part of the book is when Katniss makes a jaw-dropping performance in the training area with her bow and arrows.  My least favorite part is probably when a poisonous fog starts chasing the tributes. Again, as mentioned, I would really like to recommend this book to people with a tough stomach.

Fun Facts

Haymitch won his games on a Quarter Quell when they put twice the amount of tributes into the arena.

Peeta had a crush on Katniss since he was five.
