The King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner

IMG_7888The book I’m reviewing is The King of Attolia, by Megan Whalen Turner. The main character is Costis, one of the king’s guards. The setting is in the Palace of Attolia. This diorama shows the most important part of the book. When assassins from Sounis, ( a rival country with Attolia,) get into the garden where the king is walking. Why the King only has one arm is because the queen of Attolia. She chopped it off in an earlier book to punish him for stealing something from her.

What happens is that the king takes a sword away from one of the three assassins and kills all of them. The assassins released the hunting dogs from their cage and that got the guards to go to the dogs, not the king. Why these people are trying to kill the king is because people don’t like that the king is from Eddis ( another rival country,) and is now the king of Attolia.

Some words to describe Costis are aggressive and loyal. Why he is aggressive is because when he gets angry he gets very aggressive. Another reason why Costis is aggressive is because he punched the king. Why Costis is loyal is because he always is on schedule to be with the king even though he doesn’t like him. I would rate this book four and three quarters out of five stars.

The Miracle on 49th Street by Mike Lupica

904597The book I’m reviewing is the Miracle on 49th Street by Mike Lupica. The main character is a girl named Molly. What Molly is trying to achieve is to convince Josh, a great basketball player, that he is her dad. Why Molly thinks Josh is her dad is because Molly’s mom who died dated Josh. The setting of the book is in Boston in about 2006.

One big event that happened was that Molly snuck into Josh’s car to have a face to face conversation with him. Why this is important is because if she got the face to face conversation with him, he might tell her the truth. Josh doesn’t believe that Molly is his daughter is because he thinks Molly’s mom would have told him. I found this interesting because now I know how hard it is to have a parent who died because they can’t back you up when you have a problem. Another interesting part was when Josh gave her court-side seats to one of his Celtics games. The Celtics are a basketball team. This was interesting to me because I thought Josh wouldn’t do anything for Molly.

One adjective to describe Molly is brave. She is brave because she goes on trains by herself from Boston to New York without her fake mom’s, Barbara’s, permission. Another adjective to describe Molly is thoughtful. I think this because she tries to see from everybody’s point of view. Another adjective to describe Molly is smart. I think this because she thinks up really good plans. One adjective to describe Josh is thoughtful. Why I think this is because he gave Molly court-side seats to a Celtics game. One quote that helped me understand Molly is: “Josh Cameron right here on this bench!” said Molly. This helped me understand Molly, because she was drawing attention to Josh when he wanted to have a calm day. So she was trying to embarrass him, like kids sometimes try to do to their parents.

I really liked this book because the way it’s written was amazing. Another thing I really liked was how Mike Lupica could describe a scene, like when he made me feel as if I was in Rockefeller Center. I would recommend this book to people who like sports because the book is based around sports. This book reminds me of Mike Lupica’s other books because they are about life connected to sports. I would rate this book four stars.

It’s Like This, Cat by Emily Cheney Neville

818095The book I’m reviewing is called It’s Like This, Cat, by Emily Cheney Neville. The main characters are a cat named Cat and a boy named Dave. Cat is Dave’s cat. Dave is trying to achieve a lot of thing but one is to get his own pet. The book takes place in the 1950s in lower Manhattan.

One very big part was when he and his best friend Nick had a fight and wouldn’t talk to each other for a week or two. The fight was about Dave being grumpy about the movie they had seen with some girls. This is really important because Nick and Dave do pretty much everything together and now won’t talk to each other or hang out. One thing that is important is that Dave goes on his first date with a girl named Mary. This is interesting because Dave doesn’t seem like a kid who would go on dates because he is calm and low key. He doesn’t seem like a guy girls would want to go out with, or like a guy who would want to go out with girls. The date is also important for the plot because he can share everything going on at home with Mary. Another thing that is important is that Cat runs away into a cellar of a building and gets stuck in a cage. When Dave got down to the cellar a college age boy freed Cat.

An adjective to describe Dave is that he is brave. He is brave because he fights his best friend when his best friend insults him. Dave is also good in school. He is a good good in school because he took extra classes because he was smart. Dave is also friendly. He is friendly because a lot of kids want to hang out with him. One quote that helped me understand Dave better is he said “Do I have to pay for the girl at the movies,” said Dave. This helped me learn about Dave because it meant that he liked the girl but he was not willing to pay for her.
I really liked this book because it told me a lot about the 1950s and the story was told very well. I also really liked this book because I never spaced out because the book was boring. I would recommend this book to someone who likes history.  I would also recommend this book to someone who likes Historical fiction. This book doesn’t really remind me of anything because I don’t read a lot about the past. I would rate this book four stars.

The Thief, by Megan Whalen Turner

imgres     The book I’m reviewing is called The Thief, by Megan Whalen Turner. The book takes place mostly in the woods. The main characters are Gen and the magus (Not capitalized in the book). The magus wants Gen to steal the Hamiathes gift, an ancient object that’s very well guarded. The reason the magus wants Gen to steal the gift is because no one has ever stolen it, so when Gen stole the gift, the magus would take all the credit.

The first important part of the book was when Gen said he could steal anything. This was important because he got thrown in jail because he was bragging about that. The second important part  was when the magus hired Gen to try to steal the Hamiathes gift after years of imprisonment. This was important because Gen would risk his life trying to steal the gift. Of course someone wouldn’t risk their life without a bribe or a gift of some sort, so the magus says if Gen tries to steal the gift, the mangus will give him a lot of gold since Gen is poor. One event that changes the direction of the story was when Gen accepted the magus’s offer. This was important because Gen would be in prison if he didn’t accept offer, but if he did accept the offer he would risk his life. Another event that changes the direction of the story is when Gen says he won’t be the Queen’s thief. This was important because the Queen would try to kill Gen if he didn’t accept. Why the Queen wants a thief is that if she wants someone to steal something for her she would have someone else get it for her. Gen is sneaky because he stole the the Hamiathes’s gift which no one has ever stolen before. Gen is also overconfident because he says he can steal anything.

I thought this book was really good because  you could never tell what was going to happen. I also liked this book because there was a lot of descriptive language. One piece of descriptive language was when the magus said Gen you are as blue as a sea. I would rate this book four and a half stars.
