Umbrella Summer by Lisa Graff

I read Umbrella Summer by Lisa Graff. The book is about a girl whose brother died and is really cautious. The girl’s name is Annie and her brother’s name is Jared. She has to find her way back to not being so cautious. On the way she also has some trouble with a friend named Rebecca. I think that the book takes place around now because she has messages on a phone. I think this book takes place more in the countryside because they are taking their bikes around and they aren’t that old. Maybe twelve or eleven. Also Rebecca has a back yard.

Annie Richards is very cautious, sad, and creative. She is cautious because after Jared died she wanted to make sure that she didn’t either. At one part she started sweating and thought that she was sick. She is sad because whenever Jared is not around at a family event it reminds her of old times and gets sad. She is creative because in the book it said before her brother died she loved making obstacle courses and the doing them. You have to be creative to make a good obstacle course.

I think that one important part in this book is when Annie spits out some stuff about her brother and how he is more important than a hamster. I think this is important because it shows that it is hard for her to think about her brother. Another important part of the book is when she gets told to close her umbrella. She got told to close her umbrella because when Jared died she got really cautious. Closing your umbrella is basically saying to Annie that she should stop being so cautious. When she told Annie to open her umbrella they were talking about Annie’s brothers birthday. I think that this is important because if she was not told to open her umbrella she would not have tried and let go a little. One more important part of the book is when Tommy, Jared’s friend, is talking and being nice to Annie. This is important because he also feels her pain about Jared dying.

I like this book for a lot of reasons. One is that the book is sad. I like books that are a little sad because it gives the book a nice plot to reflect on. The second reason is that I liked how she had a little problem with her friend. I like this because it makes the book more interesting when the book already is interesting. I would recommend this book because it always has something new to make it interesting. For example when she was just riding her bike and then a kid came and scared her. You did not see it coming, and it made it a lot more interesting. I think that this book is unique because does not remind me of any book or movie. Another reason why this book is unique is that in this book she has many problems not just one. I would give this book a four star rating because it was really good and I really liked it. I would not give it five because it wouldn’t have the same reaction if you read it again.

The Castle In The Mist by Amy Ephron

I read The Castle In The Mist by Amy Ephron. The book is about a girl named Tess who finds a hidden castle. She discovers that there is a family that lives there and she makes friends with the kid. She hangs out with them and plays with them. At the end something happens and she has the find a way to fix it. This book takes place in a little town. I think it takes place around now because it mentions not having wifi and not being able to use their phones.

Tess is brave, persistent, and adventurous. Tess is brave because when she saw that her brother and her friend were in trouble she went ahead and saved them. She did not think a lot about it  she just thought of a plan and went for it. Tess is persistent because when her brother and her friend were in trouble she did not give up and made a plan to save them. Tess is adventurous because when she found the castle she was walking around the forest adventuring and she went pretty far.

In this book I think that it is important that William’s house is hidden and no one can see it. I think that this is important because it tells you about his dad. It tells you that his dad does not like when things are open to everyone and that he needs his privacy. I also think that it is important that Tess’s parents are both away. I think this because when she starts thinking about things she thinks about them and what they said about what she should do. Something important that she thought of was when there was a storm she thought of her dad saying to her, “Don’t go there, don’t try to imagine me over there. Just think of me as right here on your shoulder. Always.” I think this is important because she is thinking about her dad in a storm when he is not there. She is remembering when he was there. It shows that she misses him and probably would want him there right then. This is important because it changes the way she acts and it changes her mood. It would change her mood probably from happy to feeling like you’re missing something.
I enjoyed this book a lot. One reason is because I wanted to know more about William so I would just keep reading. The second reason is that I wanted to know if her mom was going to be okay or know if the dad would be okay reporting the war. I would recommend this book. I think this because I liked how mysterious William was and how I wanted to know more about the castle. I think that this book is unique because I haven’t seen a movie or book about a girl who is living in a little town with her aunt and brother before the girl goes off and finds a castle. I would give this book a four star rating because I liked it a lot I probably wouldn’t want to read it again.

The Higher Power of Lucky, by Susan Patron

I read a book called The Higher Power of Lucky by Susan Patron. The book is about a girl named Lucky that is 10 years old and her mom died. Because of that she has a guardian to take care of her. But then after awhile she thinks her guardian is going to move. She runs away to prove to her guardian that she actually wants to stay. At the end when they find Lucky  she does something that she would not have done if she did not run away. The book takes place in a town called Hard Pan in California. The time period is sometime before 2007 but there were computers. I know this because they did not have I-phones but they did have computers.

Lucky is really brave, sometimes cranky, and sometimes really sad. She is brave because she ran away from home in a dust storm. This makes her brave because in a dust storm people are trying to get inside and away from the dust but instead Lucky  is going out. She is cranky because whenever a little boy that is five years old comes to her house she gets really mad and tells him to get out. He does not deserve it because all he wants her to do is read him a book called are you my mother. Also Lucky is not always this cranky it is only when the boy is there. And last Lucky is sometimes sad because when she thinks about her mom she starts crying. Like wants she started crying into her mom’s ashes which were in a flower pot.

In The Higher Power of Lucky, it is important that her mom dies. This is important because if her mom did not pass away Brigette would not be her guardian. Also Lucky probably would not have ran away. Another important thing is that Lucky found the passport in Brigette’s bag. This is important because if she did not find the passport she would not have thought Brigette was going to leave. She would not have ran away if she didn’t find these clues.

I kind of liked this book because it is very slow and at the beginning nothing is happening. This goes on for about three fourths of the book. Like at the beginning it was mostly talking about her job at a place where they share their stories. Once you get to the last fourth of the book it gets interesting and you want to know what is going to happen next. Once I got to the part of Lucky  running away, I just wanted to keep reading. I would recommend this book because at the end you can’t stop reading you just want to know what is going to happen. I also would not recommend this book because at the beginning it is so so slow. I think that The Higher Power of Lucky is unique because in no other story that I know of there is a girl who’s mom died and feels not loved so she runs away. If I gave this a one to five star rating this book would be a three.

Dork Diaries: Tales from a Not-So-Smart Miss Know It All , by Rachel Renee Russell

In this book the main character is a girl named Nikki. The main plot in this book is that sometimes the main character makes bad decisions and then needs to fix them. Also after she made the bad decision she has a hard time fixing it. For example at a sleepover she got dared to do something that was crazy and she actually did it. In this book it takes place in probably 2017. I think that it takes place in 2017 because she has a portable  phone. She maybe lives in the suburbs because a girl that Nikki is not friends with has a back yard.

The main character is sometimes very unmotivated, busy, and concerned.

Nikki is unmotivated a lot because she makes a problem and then tries to fix and it does not work and she gets really unmotivated and does not want to try again. For example Nikki tries to get a job working at the school and does not get it. After that she just gave up. Luckily her friends made her go back. Nikki is also busy because she is always dealing with a problem or an activity. In the book she has a problem with the girl she does not like and then that got her into a busy job. Nikki is concerned a lot because she is trying to fix one of her problems and she does not know what is going to happen.

In the book I found it interesting that she thought all the exercises she had to do for PE were not what they were supposed to be. For example she thought a curl up was curling her hair. Something that is important to the story is that her friends are really supportive. That is important because if her friends were not supportive she would not fix her problems because she would just give up. In the book it is also important that Nikki has an arch-nemesis. I think this is really important because if she didn’t she probably would not have as many problems. Also almost every problem she has her arch-nemesis is in it.

I enjoyed this book so, so much. In almost every chapter something makes me laugh hysterically. In one chapter she told a man she was going to the bathroom and then came back quickly because she really did not have to go. When she came back, he wondered why she was back so quickly when she said she was going to the bathroom. Another funny thing is that in one of the chapters a cat attacked her. You did not see it coming at all. Also in the book the main character Nikki is a lot like Greg in Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I think this because they are both getting themselves into big problems. In Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Greg and his brother don’t always get along. In Dork Diaries it is the same but Nikki has a little sister. I would really recommend this book because it is so funny and there is always something happening. If I had to rate this book I would give it five stars because I would love to read it again.

My Destiny Dream Has Came

Spoiler ALERT – my review reveals a BIG important part of this story,  so if you want it to be a surprise do not read any further!

In my book there is this dream that this one family tree has. It kind of predicts your future. This girl’s dream is a lot of colorful flowers and a key. She does not know what it means and has to figure it out. I think this is important because the dream is a big part of her future and the book is about her story and future. It’s very mysterious and weird. It is a very good book and you should go read it.
