Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins

Gregor the Overlander is about a boy and his little sister who fall through a grate in their laundry room. They land in a strange world full of giant spiders, mice, bats, cockroaches, rats and more. Gregor’s dad is missing. It turns out he’s been trapped in the Underland for the past two and a half years. There is a prophecy, the Prophecy of Gray, that includes Gregor. Gregor teams up with a group of humans, their bats,  two cockroaches, two spiders, and one other very important creature from the Underland to find his dad and rescue him. This book is the first in a series called The Underland Chronicles by Suzanne Collins.

Gregor is pathetic, bored, and scared. He becomes awesome in the second book. In the first book, the best characters are Rip Red, Luxa, Ares, and Boots. Luxa is brave, annoying, and stubborn. Luxa is stubborn when she is mad at Gregor, even when he is not upset with her. Luxa is brave when she fights the rats. She is annoying all the time; she’s a queen and overuses that responsibility on Gregor and always tells him what to do. As the books go on, there are more common characters who you learn more about.

My favorite part was probably at the very very end (warning: spoilers) when Gregor and Ares bond. This is significant because Gregor gets his own bat. Ares has a sad back story. Also Now that I have read the whole series it’s also kind of sad because I know sad stuff is coming. (spoilers over). Another favorite part is when Boots and Temp the cockroach meet. That is very funny and throughout the series Boots and Temp serve as comic relief. It’s funny because it’s a 2-year-old and a giant cockroach having a conversation and the 2-year-old isn’t even scared.

As the books go on you learn just how many prophecies Gregor is in. If you love the first book, be warned the other books are gorier. If you don’t like gory stuff don’t read them. This is a very fast paced book. The first two chapters are kind of slow. Like Harry Potter, it takes a while to get into the action but once Gregor falls into the grate it’s like snap snap snap and he’s on an amazing quest. Some important things happen before that so you need to read those two chapters (some very funny stuff happens like when his Grandma calls him “Simon”). those books where there are tons of characters and also it’s kind of a mystery with the prophecies – they need to find them and unravel them. This series is sad, happy, and violent. If you know how Suzanne Collins writes, if you read the Hunger Games, you will see this is much better. I rate this book on a ten star scale 100 stars.

Ahsoka by E.K. Johnston

Ahsoka by E.K. Johnston is a Star Wars book that takes place a long time ago in a galaxy far far away. This book takes place in space, but mainly on two planets. This book tells the story of Ahsoka after The Clone Wars, before Rebels (both television shows). Ahsoka goes all over the galaxy and saves many lives and kills many people (Stormtroopers). Kaden is Ahsoka’s only friend and Ahsoka rescues Kaden.

I would describe the main character, Ahsoka, as angry and conflicted. Ahsoka is angry because of Barriss Offee and the clones’ betrayal. When Ahsoka thinks back on Barriss’ betrayal she seems angry. You can tell she is conflicted because whenever anybody calls her a Jedi Ahsoka replies, “I am not a Jedi anymore.” There seems to be a struggle inside of her trying to decide if she is a Jedi or not. Kaden is lucky, stubborn and kind. Kaden was lucky because she was rescued after being captured THREE times! She was stubborn when she disobeyed. Kaden was kind when she tried to sacrifice herself to save her friends.

One of the most interesting and important parts of the book is when Ahsoka builds her famous white light sabers. This is interesting because the way she does it is very, very intriguing. She uses them as weapons of protection. They are important because she uses them to save her life and the lives of others.

This book was amazing! It was nice to know what happened between Star Wars Rebels and Clone Wars. Ahsoka is one of my favorite characters in the Clone Wars series and it was really interesting to get a book from her perspective. If you enjoy this book, you might also enjoy some other books I know that are about the Clone Wars but from her perspective. This book is not as good if you don’t know a lot about Star Wars, so I would recommend watching The Clone Wars first. On a 1-5 star rating five stars.

Gods of Manhattan, By Scott Mebus

Gods of Manhattan is about a boy named Rory and his little sister, Bridget. Rory gets drawn into this world of monsters and gods and all parts ancient Manhattan tied together. There are two stories going on at the same time. It has lots of twists and turns in the story. It makes you feel like you’re actually in the situation that Rory is in.

Rory is easily distracted like when he is underwater he thinks he should stay underwater.  Rory is intelligent. He makes good decisions. He is caring, everything he does the in second half is for his sister. Can a dead alligator float? This book answers all of the questions like that. One of my favorite parts was when Fritz and Clarence used Hamish as a boat. Hamish is a dead alligator used to escape Tobias in the bank.  This book is all about how much people have forgotten about old Manhattan and I think it’s amazing. In Chapter 17 there’s an amazing part where Burr makes the decision that changes everything…

I loved the book, it was very surprising in some ways. There were times when I wasn’t expecting the book to go that way. Plus, it was very historically accurate: the gangs were real gangs, but still fiction. I’d recommend this for people who enjoy history and action. This book blends three genres together, historical fiction, fantasy, and adventure. On a 1-5 star rating, I would give this book a 20-star rating, it was that good.

Harry Potter vs Triwizard Tournament

Harry Potter and Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling

December 1994: Harry Potter faces Hungarian Horntail in first task of the Triwizard Tournament.

Hogwarts was chosen to host this legendary event. The champions all hope to win eternal glory and a thousand galleons. Harry’s name was put in The Goblet of Fire. There was an age line that should have prevented this because Harry is only 14 and the age line was 17 and up.

Champions were only allowed a wand in the first task. Therefore Harry used accio to get his broomstick. He then used the broomstick to fly up really high so that the fire, when the dragon breathed it, could not touch him. He dodged the dragon’s fire, ended up in a dive below the dragon’s leg, and snatched the golden egg!
His score was, from the different judges: Madame Maxine, 8; Bartimaeus Crouch, 9; Albus Dumbledore, 9; Ludo Bagman, 10; and Karkaroff, 4. Harry’s best friend, Ron, said, “What! Four! You lousy scumbag,” when Harry got the marks. Harry will move on to the second task along with all the other champions, Cedric Diggory, Fleur Delacour, and Viktor Krum.
