The Vanishing Violin By: Michael D. Beil

6929700

Can you solve three mysteries at the same time? Well, the Red Blazer Girls can. The Red Blazer Girls are from The Vanishing Violin by Michael D. Beil. The Vanishing Violin is very different from my other books because I usually read realistic fiction or magical realism but this book is mystery. Mystery is very different than realistic fiction because a lot can happen that is not realistic but depending on the book a lot can be realistic too. This book is part of the Red Blazer Girls Series. They call themselves that because they wear red blazers for school. “They” is Sophie St. Pierre, Rebecca Chen, Margaret Wrobel and Leigh Ann Jaimes.

In the first book – The Ring of Rocamadour – they found the ring of Rocamadour and now in the second book they have to figure out who is sneaking into the school and cleaning it, crack a bunch of codes that lead to a violin and last try to find yet another stolen violin. This book does not ever mention when it takes place but I am guessing around the same time it was written which was 2010. I also think it is about modern time because there are iPhones, motorcycles and the subway. This all takes place in New York City and sometimes at their school, St. Veronica’s.

I think I would describe Sophie as silly. For example,  When someone says “Hey, loooosers.” she responded “Nice to see you, too, my dearest darling pal,” She also really likes math so that helps her figure out some mysteries. Like when she said “The ring is about three inches in diameter, so the circumference is a little over nine inches. (That’s pi times the diameter, if you’re keeping score-I love math.)” This book is interesting because it is from Sophie’s perspective like when she says “I” or “me”. An important part of the story is that Margaret is getting mystery letters from somebody that leads to the mystery violin. All the friends help her and figure out more clues. Will the clues ever stop? Also, the head of their school is counting on them to figure out is cleaning the school but with two other mysteries on their hands that can be lot!

Some of the events that change the direction of the story is at Mr. Chernofsky’s (Margaret’s friend) violin shop he hires someone else that seems a little suspicious considering he went to jail…  I really enjoyed this book because of how the author sets up the story and I also really enjoyed the ending that the author makes. Another reason I enjoyed this book is how everyone’s personalities. I would recommend this book to readers that like series since this is part of the The Red Blazer Girls series. Some connections is to the friends because I feel sometimes I feel like the friends are a lot like my friends. I would definitely rate this four stars. ☆☆☆☆
How does it all connect?

The Sorcerer’s Secret by Scott Mebus

51BdR1L+xML._SX324_BO1,204,203,200_

The series my book is in is called, The Gods Of Manhattan and it’s called Sorcerer’s Secret. It is by Scott Mebus and it is the 3rd book in the series. The main characters are Bridget and Rory Hennessy. But there are many other secondary characters. Rory and Bridget are trying to save Mannahatta from an evil god named William Kieft and his spirits that want to kill all the gods in Mannahatta. Rory and Bridget try to kill him by exposing his deep dark secret that no one knows but him. This book takes place in Inwood, Manhattan and the time period goes from the 1600s – 2008.

One big event that happens is when Rory decides between killing Kieft or saving his mom from death. This was important because his mom means the world to him but if he doesn’t kill Kieft, all good gods and good spirits will die. If the good gods and good spirits die, then the normal people will have no protection from evil. One part I found most important in The Sorcerer’s Secret is when Bridget sees her dad for the first time. This is important because it is amazing that since she was born, her dad ran away, then when she was 9 years old she saw her dad for the first time and later on in the book something very important happened around her dad. One part I also found the most interesting was when Rory finds out his dad’s name. This was interesting because his dad is/was so famous but you would never think that that was his dad. It surprised me that his dad’s name was _______because out of every person in the world, I would NEVER guess that that was his name.

Rory is brave, happy, and angry. Rory is brave because he almost died for his sister to protect her. Rory is also brave because he does not let people push him around. Rory is happy because his family reunited with each other. Rory is also happy because he is a optimist. Rory is angry because someone tries to kill his mother and he loves his mother with all his life. Rory is also angry at his father but also filled with love for his father because he didn’t know his father for a long time and was just getting to know him when he died. “I forgive you, too,” he whispered down his father’s ear “I love you,” and then his father died in Rory’s hands.

I really enjoyed this book because it is a action book. I also enjoyed it because it is about a boy in fourth grade and you can relate to him. I would definitely recommend this book because it makes you want to jump right into the next page. I also would definitely recommend this book because it is a trilogy and it will consume time (if you read quickly) A few books and movies like this are the Percy Jackson series/movie, the Harry Potter series/movie, and The City Of Ember series/movie. It is like these books/movies because they are all action adventures and friendship stories. I would give this book 5 stars ★★★★★ because it is SO good I would actually consider reading it 100 times!

Gods of Manhattan

gmlgI read Gods of Manhattan from the Gods of Manhattan series by Scott Mebus. The book is about a special boy who has a unique gift. The book takes place in the present day in Manhattan, but there are characters in the story that have lived throughout New York’s History, some who remember it as Mannahatta. These characters are the Gods of Manhattan.Gods of Manhattan

The main character is a boy called Rory Hennessey. Rory is a Light, a Light is someone who can see what regular humans can’t see, they see what is “really” there. Regular people just see normal stuff and what is happening in the present, Rory can see details and things that other people can’t see.  For example when Rory watches a magic show he can see how they do the “magic.” He can even see the Gods and all the other strange creatures and going ons around them. You might want to be a Light but it is very dangerous being a one. When Rory first found out he was a Light he was upset and didn’t want to be one, because he was worried about the safety of himself and his family. The main focus of the story is that Rory is the only Light left alive in Manhattan and he is the only one who can save the city and perhaps the world even if he doesn’t know it. To become a God you have to do something that everyone remembers. For example John Jacob Astor, a real person is the God of Success. All the other Gods and other worldly characters in the book were created by the life they led in their real life.

Rory begun to figure out he was a Light on his sister Bridget’s birthday. She had a magician come to their house whose name was Hex. In the past Rory had always been able to see through every magician’s trick no matter how complicated they seemed to be and Hex appeared to be like any other magician. However this time Rory had no idea how the magician had been able to do the trick. This disturbed Rory because he couldn’t work out how the trick was performed so he went to Central Park to think about it. When he was in the park he noticed a squirrel and a mouse having a kung fu fight, which is ridiculous and he thought he was going crazy. Next a Native American from another time period appeared in the park and chased him out. Rory ran straight into Hex and when Rory explained what had happened to him Hex explained he was a Light…

Another important part of the book is when Rory met a “Stranger” for the first time. A Stranger is a monster that looks like a kid but it has very sharp metallic teeth like knives. It walks up to you like a little child and asks you to come and then it attacks and kills you. Luckily for Rory he managed to escape the vicious attack but spends the rest of the book avoiding these horrible creatures.

These two events changed Rory’s life positively and negatively. As a result of these events Rory decided to go with Hex and try to save the world

Rory is very responsible; for example he takes his sister around New York by himself. He also made sure that Bridget was safe at home when he ventured out to save Manhattan. Bridget is brave because she fought a Plug Ugly (a gang member) and when someone tried to shoot Rory she jumped in front of him. Even though her brother left her behind at home, she decided to go after him to save him. Rory is very cautious and does not trust anybody. Throughout the story Rory is uncertain which side he should be on and questions everything. He thinks twice before he does anything and it took him a week before he joined Hex.

A good example of Rory’s responsibility is displayed when he said to bridget, “You can not come. It is too dangerous.”

I really enjoyed the Gods of Manhattan, but I got confused at times because the book has two different but parallel stories being told in each chapter and it was difficult to follow along all the time. I enjoyed the suspense in the book often created by the two parallel stories leaving you at cliffhangers at the end of each chapter. I would recommend this book to someone who likes Percy Jackson books because it has many similarities like Gods living with humans. It is a long exciting read and if you have problems remembering storylines in books this maybe too complicated for you. Rick Riordan the writer of Percy Jackson said, “it’s a fast and exciting read,” I think he commented on the book because it is has a very similar theme.

I would rate this book four stars.

The Lightning Thief, by Rick Riordan

imagesI am reading The Lightning Thief book one in the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan. In my book, the main characters are Percy Jackson, son of Poseidon(God of the Sea),  Grover, a Satyr (a half goat half man), and Annabeth, daughter of Athena (the Goddess of Wisdom). Percy Jackson’s problems start after he thinks his mother is dead and discovers that Poseidon is his father. Then when Zeus thinks that Poseidon has stolen his precious lightning bolt called the Master Bolt, Percy Jackson is given a quest to get the lightning bolt (the strongest weapon in the world). Percy thinks that Hades stole the bolt to create an argument between Poseidon and Zeus, so he sets out to get the bolt from Hades and give it back to Zeus to clear his father’s name.  The Lightning Thief takes place during the 20th century in the United States and has Greek mythological creatures and gods running around and living with mortals, otherwise known as humans.

Percy sets off on his quest with Grover and Annabeth. They have to go from  New York to Los Angeles, but they can not take a plane because Zeus is the god of the sky and it might not be safe for the son of the god of the sea. They need to go to Los Angeles because they think there is an entrance to the underworld there. As they journey across the country, they encounter many different monsters who are trying to stop them from reaching LA. The second monster they come across is Medusa. Medusa is particularly dangerous because if you look in her eyes you turn to stone. When they first see her she wears a black veil over her face that covers her snakey hair. She lures them in her house with fresh hamburgers and chocolate shakes. Then she asks them to pose for a photo and just as she was going to take her veil off they realized something bad was going to happen.

The story takes a different direction when Luke, a councillor from Camp Half Blood, where they all went to school, says that whoever stole the Master Bolt would surely need to be invisible to get it. Finding the master bolt is a big deal in the. Another thing that changed the direction of the book is that Ares The God Of War used to be Percy’s friend but at the end of the book he tried to kill him. Percy also figured out that Ares was the one who stole the Lightning boult.

One of the things I really loved about Percy Jackson was that he is brave; for example he went to the Underworld and confronted his uncle Hades. He also fought Ares The God of War with his magical sword Riptide on the beach to recover the helm of darkness for Hades. It was terrifying because he was fighting the God of War who obviously is a very good fighter and Percy is just a boy.  Percy is also loyal because he constantly risked his life for friends and family. He went to the Underworld on his quest to retrieve the Master Bolt but really he went to save his mother despite the fact that no one had ever done that before and lived.

The Lightning Thief is my favorite book I have ever read! I never knew that I was into Greek mythology but now I love Greek mythology. I am already reading The Sea of Monsters the second book in the Percy Jackson series. I also like that in The Lightning Thief There is a lot of action and monsters Percy has to fight. I would rate my book five stars out of five.

Wonderstruck By Brain Selznick

imgres-1This book is called Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick. The main character is Ben. In Wonderstruck Ben runs away to New York City to find his dad. Wonderstruck takes place in New York City and Minnesota.

One part thought I was important was when Ben went to the library because it’s when he finds what he’s looking for. I like the part when Ben finds the cabinet in the museum where his seashell turtle fits in the design because it’s mysterious even though it doesn’t really mean anything. It is important Ben meets Jamie at the museum. Jamie shows Ben a special room in the museum that used to be an exhibit but is now a storage room filled with random stuff. Ben is optimistic because always he always thinks on the bright side. He never gives up looking for his dad. I also think Ben is brave because he’s deaf and still goes on this big trip to New York City.

I enjoyed this book because it was action packed and written well. The pictures were really good and it had a good life lesson. I rate this book 5 and a half stars!

Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, by Judy Blume

TalesFourth9Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing was written by Judy Blume in 1972. From reading the book recently you would not know that is was written around 40 years ago. The book seems so futuristic. In the book the main characters are Peter Warren Hatcher and his younger brother Fudge (Farley Drexel Hatcher). Farley is called Fudge because when he first learned his name he called himself Fudge. In the book the main problem is Fudge. He always hits pots and pans together to make a very loud noise, which irritated Peter so much that he wanted Fudge out of his life. Fudge also annoys Peter because Fudge also goes into Peter’s room and played with Dribble, Peter’s turtle. The setting of the book is in Manhattan on 25 W. 68th St. with the coolest elevator ever that takes him up to his 12th floor apartment. Peter and Fudge live with their mom and dad.

One important part in my book is when Peter and Fudge’s mom left the oven on and left three 9 year old kids, Sheila the great, Jimmy Fargo, Peter’s best friend, and Peter in charge of a 2 year old baby. It did not end well because Fudge, the 2 year old baby, thought he was a bird, flew off a jungle gym and knocked out his 2 front teeth. The second important detail is when the dad’s clients come to stay with them and Fudge scares them out of the apartment. One event that changes the story is when Fudge and Peter’s mother goes to Boston to visit her newborn niece and Fudge gets to be in his dad’s client’s commercial. It changed the direction of the story because Fudge’s mom thought Fudge was more grown-up than usual and also he looked more mature on T.V. Because Fudge looked more grown-up the mom gave him more responsibility that he could not handle.  The second event is when Fudge swallowed Peter’s pet turtle and has to go to the emergency room to take medicine to poop the turtle out. Peter is worried because it was his turtle and the turtle might die. The turtle dies, then Peter gets a puppy and names it Turtle after his turtle. It changed the direction of the story because it made Peter is no longer willing to tolerate Fudge. One adjective to describe Fudge is silly because he thinks he is a bird. Another adjective to describe Fudge is annoying because he bangs pots and pans to make a “clunk clack’’ that annoys everyone in the house. One adjective that describes Peter is clever. Peter knows how to deal with Fudge because when Fudge didn’t like shoes Peter tried them on and Fudge liked them. I think Peter is jealous because of all the attention Fudge gets.

I enjoyed this book because it reminded me of my brother, on Thanksgiving when he fell off a rock and scraped his face and eye on the ground in Central Park. This book reminds me of this event because the book takes place in Central Park and Fudge and Dennis fell off something. The book was also really funny. I would rate this book 5 stars because it was so awesome.
