The Giver

My book review is on The Giver by Louis Lowery. The main character’s name is Jonah. Jonah lives in a very controlled society.  When you are one you are a one, two you are called a two, so on. When you turn nine you get a bike, when your group turns twelve you stop going to school and you get assignd a job. At the ceremony when Jonah turns twelve, he is chosen  for a very special job. He is going to be the next receiver.

Now Jonah doesn’t know what the receiver is. When he gets his sheet to start his training it says “You are allowed to lie.” Lie? Why would he lie? It also says he will go go through much pain. Why? How? The old receiver will train him. Jonah calls the receiver the giver. The giver shows him how life used to be, before this society changed. The Giver changes Jonah by sharing memory’s of the past before the society changes and makes Jonah realize pain and how other people live.

The giver gives Jonah memories by transferring them through him to Jonah. The first memory is of sledding. But then the actual pain starts. He gets memory frostbite and cuts and burns. The society has made it so no one feels pain. There is no sadness, but not much happiness. Jonah didn’t know what snow was, he had never sledded. The society didn’t even have hills. A big thing he learns is what color is. His soceity has no color.

I enjoyed this book a lot. I liked it because it has many feeling, it interested me and it was different from any book I had ever read. I rate this book 5 stars. I think everyone should read this book. This book is also kind of sad so maybe a reader who likes a little emotion.

The Glass Sentence by S.E. Grove

The Glass Sentence by S.E. Grove

by Margaret

I recently read a book called The Glass Sentence by S.E. Grove. This book takes place in a place called New Occident, in 1891.The main character is a girl named Sophia. Sophia lives with her uncle named Shadrack because her parents went missing when she was really little. The only way how to know where you’re going is by maps. They do not have any electronic devices. In New UnknownOccident there is something going on called the Great Disruption. The Great Disruption is when the world got split up into little groups and each of those little groups got put into a different time period.

No one knows who is causing the Great Disruption. One day, in Parliament people are trying to figure out how to stop the Great Disruption. They decide that they should close all of the borders of New Occident, so no  one can leave and no one can come. Soon, the borders will be closed and everyone will be stuck in New Occident. Meanwhile, Shadrack is determined to find Sophia’s parents so Shadrack teaches Sophia everything that he knows about maps. They are practically prepared to leave for Sophia’s parents when some mysterious men go into their house and steal Shadrack.  All that Sophia knows about these men is that they all have giant scars across their cheeks. Sophia was so sad. Then, Sophia sees a mysterious boy from a different country in her house. His name is Theo and he had just escaped from the circus and needed somewhere to sleep. Sophia and Shadrack have a housekeeper named Mrs. Clay from the Baldlands. Mrs. Clay is a little bit crazy because she had encountered one of the worlds most rare creatures called a Lachrima when she was little and the thought of it still haunts her now.  On page 124, Theo says “I wish I could have met a Lachrima.” Theo ends up coming with Sophia on her journey to save Shadrack.

Sophia and Theo go around the world, traveling through time. I really enjoyed this book because it has that old-timey feeling. I also like how this book uses a lot of old-fashioned words. I like how it has a very clever plot. If you like mysterious, old-fashioned books, than this is the perfect book for you. I would rate this book four stars.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

Hungergames_posterKatniss Everdeen lives in Panem. Panem is made up of most of the old North America but now it’s 12 districts and a capital. Katniss has a pretty normal life for a district 12 girl. Her dad died in a mining accident, she has a mom and sister, a tiny house and  almost the amount of food she needs to survive. The time has come around again for The Hunger Games.

Why does Panem have The Hunger Games? About 50 years back the capitol had a big fight against the rest of panem. To pay back the capitol made… The Hunger Games, where you kill people to win. The two names that they pick  out of the bowls could change Katniss’s life. And the names are… Peeta Mellark and Prim Everdeen. Katniss gives her life for one of the most important people in her life. Her life is about to change forever and this might be the last time she’ll ever see her home again.

From here on everything is different. First she makes a stunning impression and is called, “The Girl On Fire.” She gets an 11 in training and mostly things are going well. But then… 1. 2. 3. The games begin. Before, Peeta was sort of her friend and now he wants to kill her. She has to go from capitol ways back to district 12 ways but worse.

The story is written in the 1st person and it’s from the perspective of Katniss. This book is good for 4-6 graders. I suggest not reading if you don’t like blood or violence. I would rate this book five stars out of five stars. After you read the books watch the movies.

Cordially Uninvited, by Jennifer Roy

cordially-uninvitedThis book is called Cordially Uninvited. The main characters are Claire and her cousin, the prince of England’s on again off again girlfriend, Belle. But know the prince and Belle are getting married and Claire is going to be a junior bridesmaid. The book takes place in England.

Let’s not forget about the other junior bridesmaid,Pandora, and her crazy old aunt,Cornelia. Pandora thinks she should be marrying the prince and Cornelia tells Pandora that she put a curse on Belle and the wedding will not make it.

Then there is the family of the Symonds who’s older boy, Tristan, is Claire’s crush and the younger sister Thalia. They think that the wedding should go on.

I loved this book because it is in 1st person, I love 1st person because you get to know the character better, and it is realistic fiction with a hint of mystery. I would recommend this to people who like England, the royal family and royal weddings. I would rate this ***** out of *****.

Mr And Mrs. Bunny Detectives Extraordinaire!

This is book is called Mr And Mrs. Bunny Detectives Extraordinaire! This book is by Polly Horvath and it is supposed to be written by a bunny. And it is illustrated by Sophie Blackall. The main characters are Mr bunny and Mrs. bunny, and Madeline.  This book is about a girl named Madeline and she lost her parents but she saw fox driving the car that she thought her parents were in. Madeline found a file card in her house! And it looked like it had code on it. On the file card it said “FANNY FOX’S CANNED RABBIT PRODUCTS FACTORY. There was a logo off a fox trying to cram a protesting rabbit into a pressure cooker.” Madeline couldn’t figure out the code so she went to her uncle, and her uncle is very good at coding. At the same time Mr bunny and Mrs. bunny needed a job so they decided to be detectives. Madeline meets the Mr and Mrs. bunny and the bunnies get hired as detectives for Madeline!
Mrs. bunny joins a hat club and is a bit busy, so Madeline does not know if she can trust the bunnies. But still Madeline hired them and she still doesn’t that she can trust them. Madeline can understand what the bunnies are saying! Soon Madeline figures out that she can speak bunny! Madeline was really surprised! But still even if she can speak bunny Madeline still did not think she can trust Mr bunny and Mrs. bunny. And for awhile Mr and Mrs. bunny could not figure it out yet. How is Madeline going to get her parents back? Will she have to hire someone else or not?
This book was really good! I want to read the next book. Sometimes I don’t even want to put it down, at some parts it gets really interesting. I would recommend this book to 9 – 12 year olds. This book is not too long but it is just right for me. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I really recommend this book!

Prodigy By Marie Lu

Prodigy is by Marie Lu is the second book in the legend series and is about two characters, Daniel (He is called Day in the book) and June. Day is a legend and June was the republics prodigy until she helped Day escape death. Day cares a lot about his family and June cared a lot about the republic (the U.S. was split up into two countries, the Republic of America and the Colonies of America) until she found out that the republic killed her brother and framed Day for it.This book starts in Los Angeles and travels all along the west. It goes to Las Vegas, Denver the Colonies Around Colorado and San Francisco.

June and Day’s main problem is the elector who kind of hates them for being able to escape the firing squad and helping the most wanted criminal escape the firing squad. Day hates the republic because several times he mentions he hates this soldier who shot his mom. And then talks about how much he wishes he was in the colonies. While his other brothers are separated one pretended to be Day and faced the firing squad for Day’s life. And his other brother has the plague and is being used as a weapon against the colonies.

I loved this book because I couldn’t put it down and I had to keep asking my mom if I could read another chapter. I would recommend this book to people that like dystopian books. And 5th-8th graders because younger that 5th graders wouldn’t understand the plot.

The Candymakers By Wendy Mass

The Candymakers is a great summer reading book by Wendy Mass. It’s about 4 kids competing in the annual candy contest, and whoever has the best candy wins. They all visit the candy factory, which leads to some very interesting mishaps. It changes their points of view all through the book, like Wonder. The big question is: Who will win?

Logan, the candymaker’s son, who has mysterious scars on his face and hands?

Miles, who talks of Afterlife and his weird allergies?

Philip, the stuck-up suit-and-tie wearing boy who has a secret notebook he’s always scribbling in?

Daisy, a pretty girl with a big secret?

Even though the kids are competing, they become very good friends. But during the contest, the friends realize things are not what they seem. Each of the contestants have a secret, some bigger than others, but hiding their secrets makes big trouble, including stealing and hiding in potato sacks, but all is put right in the end.

Of course, all the contestants loved viewing the candy factory, and were surprised at how many rooms there were. All except Logan, who had lived there all his life. “Logan wondered what it must feel like to be seeing the factory for the first time. He tried to pretend he’d never seen the machine that was now compressing the nibs into a gooey cocoa powder. Or the one that ground up up the rest of the bean into a fine brown powder. Alas, he couldn’t do it.” Wendy Mass writes.

I loved this book, and it’s my favorite Wendy Mass book I’ve read so far. I like this book because it’s about candy, and I LOVE candy. I also like it because it’s by Wendy Mass, and she’s so creative when she describes the candy. I also like this book because there are lots of secrets, and it’s fun to try to work them out in your head.

I think people who don’t like candy should read this, because this book will make you like candy. Wendy Mass makes candy sound SO GOOD. She wrote, “All that silky, warm chocolate and those buckets of gooey marshmallows and those freshly baked graham crackers.” to describe a s’more. I would rate this book 100 stars if I could because I used to like candy, but now I LOVE candy!

Dork Diaries~Tales from a not so fabulous life! By Rachel Renee Russell!

url

My book is called Dork Diaries and it is by Rachel Renee Russell. The main character’s name is Nikki, she is in middle school. Nikki has just moved to a new school and has a locker right next to the most popular girl in school. If you get on the bad side of the most popular girl in school Mackenzie Hollister you’re dead meat! She is trying to change  from being unpopular to popular. The book is based in the USA, mostly at the mall, in her school and at parties.

One important event that happened was that she is going to a new school and she got a present because it was a new school and she got something to make her feel better about moving. She had wanted a cell phone for a while. Guess what her mom got her, a diary!!  No one writes in a diary any more! Another important event is that she wants a phone so badly so she goes on ebay and buys a phone for 12.99. She spread the word in her school that she got an awesome new phone. Then two of the most popular girls came up to her and started talking and asked her to sit at lunch with them, then Nikki’s phone rang and it didn’t stop… She opened the door to her locker and all the people in the hall saw her new phone… a cheap pay phone was in her locker!!!

She makes some new friends! She found them because she signed up for shelving library books. She met these girls named Chloe and Zoe.

Nikki is really nice and shy. But when the mean girl gets into the conversation, whoa things go in a whole new direction. Once her and the mean girl were in a fight and Nikki said, “Cry me a river of tears, Build a bridge and get over it!” I think this quote is important because is says that Nikki trying to stand up for her self.

I loved the book! I loved it because There are so many twists and turns. One example of a twists and turn is when she meets her BFF’s. Nikki  was so lonely before and that is why it is surprising. Another twist and turn is when she has to take her sister to see The Nutcracker. I don’t think that was in the first book, though. The last reason why I loved it is because when she is in the library with her BFF’s she always goes on the library phone and calls random people and says stuff on the phone to them.

I’d recommend this book to people who like Diary Of A Wimpy Kid. Just be prepared it is a little different. I would recommend it to those people because They both write in a diary and there is a lot of drama. I think this book is 4 stars.

The BFG By Roald Dahl

My book review is on THE BFG by Roald Dahl. The book is about a girl named Sophie who meets a giant named the BFG. Sophie is an orphan so she is used to being polite and helpful.  One night the BFG kidnaps Sophie because Sophie sees him. The BFG takes Sophie to giant vill. Giant vill is a place that has a yellow ground and no trees. And then Sophie realizes what giants do for their living…

…They eat children up at night…

So of course Sophie wants to make sure that the other mean giants don’t find out about her.

While the BFG isn’t saving other kids, and since he doesn’t eat  other kids, he catches dreams and he gives the good dreams to kids all over the world. Sophie does not want to stay in the place where there are giants because if they find out about her she will be eaten. “Why can’t I just go back to my old orphanage,” Said Sophie. “You can’t go back there because if you do you will tell everyone and then people will try to find us giants,” Said the BFG.

I liked this book because Sophie isn’t the type of girl that gives up quickly and she is very nice. I would recommend this book to people who like adventure and nonsense words like a snozzcumber or a wrilndgritting type of dream. I would rate this book 5 stars .
