Wherever I Wind Up By R.A Dickey

Have you ever wondered about R.A. Dickey, a retired baseball player? You should read Wherever I Wind Up. It is by R.A. Dickey. In the book R.A Dickey goes through the journey of being a baseball player. He grew up poor going to 2 dollar baseball games. As his life moves on his parents end up splitting up. As an adult he knows that he will not get a job because he is not smart enough. After college he got drafted to a major league baseball team. He then goes through a journey of going up and down from the majors to the minors. He travels as a free agent going from team to team. He starts as a Twin and then goes to the Marlins and then the Twins and ends up on the Mets. While he travels failing in baseball  his wife Anne lives in Nashville with his three kids. They keep separating farther apart both in their relationship and distance. He is a knuckleball pitcher. In the beginning of his career his coaches told him that he would have to be an almost always knuckleball pitcher to stay in the majors. He has trouble with his pitching when he moved to the Marlins but good things might be ahead on the Twins. The book takes place in Florida, Arizona, Minnesota, New York and Nashville. He is always moving. There are other places where the book takes place but these are the main places.

Three ways that I would describe R.A. as is depressed, nervous and resilient. He is depressed because he misses his wife and feels like she might leave him. Being away all the time brought their relationship down and that caused him to become depressed. They are close to being divorced but they still love each other. R.A is nervous because he believes that he will never stay in the big leagues. He is nervous that the knuckleball will not work and the decision that he made will never pay off. Lastly, R.A. is resilient because he will sometimes not pitch his knuckleball even though the coach tells him to. He still mixes in a lot of curveballs and fastballs. This is why R.A is an interesting person.

My three favorite parts of the book are when R.A gets stuck in the Mississippi River, when he goes up to the majors for the first time and when R.A and one of the major league teammates went out together. The time when R.A got stuck in the Mississippi River was one of my favorite parts. This was because I liked how he used words to paint a picture. In his life he is sinking and in the river he is literally sinking so it is a metaphor. Another one of my favorite parts was when R.A first made it to the majors. This was one of my favorite parts because I liked how he felt so proud. He was proud because his sacrifices paid off. He was happy because he could get a chance to make good money. Another one of my favorite parts was when a baseball player on R.A’s team bought him clothes. He was getting clothes because he did not have enough money before to get them. This was one of my favorite parts because I loved how humble the other baseball player was.

I really enjoyed reading the book because I liked the story behind it. I liked how he faced so many obstacles and overcame all of them with a positive attitude. I loved the fact that it was the player who wrote the book because it gave a real addition to the content. I would recommend this book because it is really interesting to read behind the scenes access of a baseball player. His life story makes the book something to definitely read. There are some sad parts of the book and there are some mildly inappropriate parts and if you do not like this it is not a book that you would enjoy. Two books that remind me of this book are Who Was Jackie Robinson and Who Was Babe Ruth. They remind me of this book because they are narratives of baseball players lives just like this. I would give this book 5 stars.

Zane And The Hurricane By Rodman Philbrick

Have you ever wondered about hurricane Katrina? You should read Zane And The Hurricane, it is by Rodman Philbrick. The book takes place in New Orleans in 2007 when hurricane Katrina happened. The book is historical fiction. It is about how rescue dogs saved people when hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans . Zane is the owner of Bandit, a mutt who saves people by choice in New Orleans from hurricane Katrina. Zane is always along for the ride with his dog. It is like Zane is on the leash not Bandit.

Zane is brave, curious and determined. Zane is brave because he follows his dog around to do things that are too dangerous for him to do but he does it anyway. One time his dog went into the water to save a person and Zane followed him, that makes him brave. Zane is curious because he tried to find his dog when he thought the dog was lost because he was away doing work for a very long time. Zane is determined when his dog was lost. That was the same time he was curious. He would not give up until he  got bandit back.

My three favorite parts of the book are when Bandit got lost, when Bandit got Zane in trouble with the police and when Zane followed Bandit to a creek. The part where Bandit got lost was on of my favorite parts because I liked how Zane wanted to find Bandit so badly. It shows the love between them. Zane went everywhere to find his dog and finally he found him near a broken down house. The part where Bandit got Zane in trouble with the police was one of my favorite parts because I loved how much the police officer cared about Bandit. This situation shows how much care was put into hurricane Katrina and the people who survived it. Another one of my favorite parts was when Zane followed Bandit to the creek. This was one of my favorite parts because it was very action packed and it felt real. To me it almost felt like I was actually in the moment. Throughout the book Zane and Bandit’s relationship gets stronger. One time a civilian was worried about the two of them but Zane and Bandit stuck together.

I enjoyed Zane And The Hurricane. I enjoyed it because I liked how realistic it was. I loved how I felt like I was actually in hurricane Katrina. I also really enjoyed how Zane was easy to relate to. I felt like I could connect with the character and by being able to connect it really helped me understand the book. I would recommend this book because it is action packed and very fast historical. I like action packed books that keep on moving and follow a strict storyline and this book did this for me. If you are like me and like this then I recommend the book. Another reason to read the book is because it teaches you a lot. It almost feels like you are in the book when you are reading it. One book that is similar to Zane And The Hurricane is I Survived Hurricane Katrina. It is similar because it is historical fiction and it is about hurricane Katrina. I would give this book four stars.

The News Crew, By Walter Dean-Myers

One book that I read this month and enjoyed was the News Crew. The News Crew is a series and the first book is called The News Crew. The book is written by Walter Dean Myers. The main character in the News Crew is Zander. Xander goes to school at DaVinci Academy in Harlem, New York. The issue that the main character goes through is that the assistant principal wants him expelled. The book takes place in modern day.

Zander is brave, smart and curious. He is brave because he stands up to Mr. Culpeper, the vice principal when he wants to throw Zander out of the school. The tension between the two of them started when he was misbehaving in the cafeteria. The vice principal wants to expel Zander because he is not gifted enough to go to a school for the gifted.  He is smart because he writes in his free time. He is curious because he always wants to know about a topic when he hears it. He writes about the topics that he is curious about for the Cruisers, the school newspaper.

One part of the book that I enjoyed was when the school newspaper kids met in the media room to talk about what they would write about. This was one of my favorite parts because it educated me on world history. It taught me that the civil rights movement is still a huge issue now. Another part I enjoyed was when Zander saw Mr. Culpeper in the hallway and ran away. It was one of my favorite parts because it was really funny in the illustration. It is also one of my favorite parts because the author used some interesting words like   to describe the moment. One big decision that my main character made was to stand mischievous. to Mr. Culpeper because that would have expelled him from the school. Don’t get me wrong Zander is smart but he makes some bad decisions. One time he went into the girls’ bathroom when he should have gone to the boys.
I enjoyed the book a lot because it fit my reading style, a fast moving pace. Another reason why I enjoyed the book was because I felt I could relate to the adjectives that I would describe him as, curious, smart and brave. I think many people can relate to the book and that is why I think other people would enjoy it. I would recommend this book because everyone can relate to the book in different ways, which will allow lots of people to enjoy the book. The News Crew can relate to any book that highlights a character who goes to school. Some examples of books are: Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Year of the Griffin and Percy Jackson and the lightning thief. (The beginning of the book). The book can connect to everyone in our fourth grade because everyone is a news reporter and Zander, the main character is a News reporter. I would give the book five stars.

Monster Attacks Camp Half-Blood

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

Camp Half-Blood- At Camp Half-Blood in the modern day a monster attacked Percy Jackson. This happened while the camp played capture the flag.

The monster attacked Percy because the monster could smell Percy’s blood. They played capture the flag with swords. Percy’s blood was too strong for the monster to stay away. Percy was very brave in the situation even though he was new to fighting. He was brave because he fought the monster. Percy’s friends were nervous after they heard the monster. The fellow campers yelled, “Monster!”

The situation was a wake up call for Percy and the camp that they may not be so safe multiple campers confirmed. Capture the flag “was intense” campers said. Percy hurt himself by falling in the water after a girl  pushed him in. Percy’s friend Luke taught him how to fight. Percy Jackson will be safe at camp Half-Blood because he will be watched by other people there, the camp director told LREI News.

Percy was taught to fight a bit before the monster came. Campers  at Camp Half-Blood were impressed because Percy could not fight before but now he can fight. Percy acted like a pro with the sword even though he did not know how to use it. The monster was scared by Percy and he ran away.

Percy Jackson used his fighting skills for the first time against the monster. “I am so scared,” Percy said. Percy Jackson overcame his fear and was known all around the camp. Percy had a problem and overcame it and “that makes him a true hero.” Do you want to read Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief?
