The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg

51wmXrwrNTL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_The Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg is a novel written by Rodman Philbrick. The book is about a boy named Homer Figg. Homer is trying to get his brother Harold back. He was illegally sold into the Union army by their uncle, Squinton Leach. The book takes place in the 1800s during the Civil War.

There were many events that changed the direction of the story. For example when Homer’s brother Harold was drafted into the army this caused Homer to leave his uncle to try to save Harold before he was killed in the war. Another important event was when Homer’s guardian left him in New York City when they were trying to find his brother. Homer then met someone that offered to help him find his brother. One big decision Homer made was when he shot his brother in the leg to stop him from getting killed in battle. Homer does save him, but after a while his brother gets an infection where he was shot so they amputate his leg. ”Now all rebel eyes-and rebel guns-will be upon him.” Homer knew he had to shoot his brother so he would drop the flag and this would prevent him from being killed by the rebels.

I enjoyed this Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg because it had a lot of action and adventure. I also liked reading this book because I learned a little more about the Civil War. People who enjoy books with suspense and people who like historical fiction books will enjoy Mostly True Adventures of Homer P. Figg. I give this book four out of five stars because I liked the book, but I didn’t love it.

Hoot by Carl Hiaasen.

hoot_1024x1024Hoot is a novel written by Carl Hiaasen. The main characters are Roy, Officer Delinko, Beatrice, Mullet fingers, Curly and Dana. Roy is the new kid in town again, but this time he ends up at Trace Middle School and goes on some unforgettable adventures. The story takes place in Miami, Florida, present day.

Roy is the main character of the book. He is brave and smart because once when Roy was on a class field trip he went off the path for a short cut to where the class was going and he found himself near a bear. Roy remembered in a book that bears have bad eyesight and the best way to avoid an attack is to just stay still, so he stood like a statue for about thirty minutes while the bear was there. Once the bear was gone, Roy still didn’t know where the bear was so he stood still for another two hours then his teacher finally found him. Roy is also adventurous. He shows us this when he goes on an adventure to find Mullet fingers. One part of the book I liked was when Roy followed Mullet fingers to his secret hiding spot. I liked this part because I wanted to know more about Mullet fingers. Another part I liked was when Roy found out about the owls and Mother Paula’s All-American Pancake House was being built on the owls’ borrows. I liked this part because I wanted to know what Roy was going to do about it.

I enjoyed the book because I liked the adventure in the book. I also liked the humor in the book. One interesting fact about this book is why Mullet fingers is called Mullet fingers? but if you want to know you will have to read the book. I would recommend this book to people who like a good laugh and a silly sense of  humor. I would also recommend this book to people who like suspense.  This book is similar to other Carl Haasen books because it has a lot of humor and takes place in Florida. I would give Hoot four out of five stars because I liked the book alot but I dont want to read it again. Out of the other two Carl Hiaasen books Chomp and Flush, Hoot would be my favorite.

Flush by Carl Hiaasen

Flush is a novel written by Carl Hiaasen. The main characters are Paine Underwood, Noah Underwood, Abby Underwood, Donna Underwood, Lice Peeking, Dusty Muleman, and Shelly. The book is about Paine, Abby, Noah, Lice, and Shelly trying to stop Dusty and his crew from dumping the Coral Queen’s holding tank into the sea. The story takes place in the Florida Keys.

I really enjoyed the parts when Noah and Abby would sneak into the woods by the dock to spy on the Coral Queen. I liked this part because once they encountered one of Dusty’s crew members. When the guy saw Noah and Abby sneaking around he grabbed Abby and Abby took a bite into the man’s arm. The man screamed so loud that Noah said you could hear him from Miami. Another important part of the book was when Noah snuck on to the Coral Queen and busted Dusty Muleman. The main character Noah Underwood is brave because he risks his life to bust the Coral Queen. He’s intelligent because he came up with the plan to take down Dusty Muleman. He’s also very determined to succeed because he does not want to fail like his father when his father sunk the Coral Queen and got thrown in jail. Just like Noah, his father wanted to sink the Coral Queen because they cared about the sea life and didn’t want them to get sick.

I really enjoyed reading Flush by Carl Hiaasen because of the humor and the plot. The book is easy to read because of the suspense. I would recommend this book to people who like adventure and humorous stories. Carl Hiaasen’s other books and movies are similar to Flush because they all are funny and suspenseful and take place in Florida. I would give this book four stars because I really liked reading it.

Chomp by Carl Hiaasen

Chomp is a novel written by Carl Hiaasen. The main characters are Wahoo and his father Micky Cray. The story takes place in Florida and in the everglades. The book is about the adventure Wahoo and his father get themselves into when they are asked to help a reality TV show called Expedition Survival.

In the beginning of the book Mickey gets a life-changing concussion from a frozen iguana that falls from a tree and hits him on the head. Now Micky lies on the couch while Wahoo takes care of all the animals in their house, which is more like a zoo than a house. One day they get a phone call from a reality TV show. The Crays owed thousands of dollars to the bank, so they had to take the job. The star of the show was not the brightest man and was not nearly the best survivalist.  Every day he takes a helicopter to the city and sleeps in a luxury hotel and leaves everyone else at a little camp on Tree Island. The main character, Wahoo is brave because everyday he feeds the alligator who bit off his finger. Wahoo is caring because he takes good care of all the wild animals and his dad who got hit by a frozen iguana. He also seems happy with his life and he does not complain if he has to do something he doesn’t want to do, and he seems to enjoy his life.

I recommend this book to people that like humor and adventure. It is also not too long but it’s not too short either. I think this book is similar to a TV show called Man VS Wild which is about a survivalist that goes into remote places and tries to get back to civilization. I give this book four out of five stars because I loved the book, but I don’t want to read it again.

From The Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg

BasilEFrankweiler4

The book I read is From The Mixed-up Files of Mrs.Basil E.Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg. The main character is Claudia. The book is about Claudia and her little brother Jamie running away. The book mainly takes place in New York at the Metropolitan Museum of Art but it never tells you what year it is but I’m guessing it takes place in the late 50s or the 60s because they had really cheap things like a hot fudge Sunday cost 27 cents and back then things were cheaper.

Claudia is the oldest out of her three brothers so she get the most chores and least amount of money in her allowance and she wanted to go on an adventure. So she goes to the Metropolitan Museum of Art with her brother Jamie and they decided to learn everything about everything there. Once it was Jamie’s turn to choose so he chose the Italian Renaissance because he thought it sounded important and when they  were walking through the Italian Renaissance they saw a line of people and they went to the line while the line was moving they saw a statue. Claudia wanted to know everything about the statue. The statue was a statue of an angel and people were trying to see if Michelangelo made the statue or not. So Claudia and Jamie wanted see if it was Michelangelo who made it or not so they found a clue and wrote a letter to the Museum but the Museum said that they already saw that clue and need more evidance that it was him. So Claudia and Jamie go to Mrs.Basil’s house and Mrs.Basil was the person who sold the statue to the Museum. Mrs. Basil tells  Claudia and Jamie that they have one hour to look for the files that say if he did the statue or did not do the statue.

I liked the book because I think it was a good book for me.  It also had like mystery and adventure that I like. I recommend this book to people who like mystery and a touch of adventure. I would also recommend this book because of  the style of the words they used are descriptive words and sentences which I personally liked . I think this book is different than other books because I have never read a book about someone running away and hiding in a museum before. I would give this book four out of five stars because it was a really good book but I don’t thinks it’s so good  it will  make me want to read it again and again.
