The Magician’s Nephew

The-chronicles-of-narnia-the-magicians-nephew-book-cover

The book I read was The Magician’s Nephew written by  C. S. Lewis. The book that the series is  part of is the Chronicles of Narnia. The book is about a girl named Polly. She becomes friends with Digory, a boy who moves in next door to live with his Uncle and his Aunt.He never really gets to talk to his uncle Andrew because he is always up to something. The book takes place in England, the wood between worlds, Narnia, and Charn

Polly is curious because she wants to know where her never ending attic leads to. She is also very gullible because she is persuaded by Uncle Andrew to touch the rings that teleport you to the wood between worlds. She’s also a risk taker because she convinces Digory  to jump into a portal to another world. There were a ton of interesting parts in this book. One interesting part was when Polly first meets Digory, what happens is that they just started telling each other stories about themselves. Another interesting part was when they are in Charn and all of these statues are sitting at the table. They notice that the farther down the table they go, the more stern the faces are. One more interesting part was when Digory goes to the wood between worlds for the first time to rescue Polly. Digory finds Polly and they have a hard time remembering everything. They said it’s a confusing place.

I loved the book so much because it seems like you are actually in the book. It’s also a friendship story and it makes you want to know more about the book.I would recommend the book because it is story about friends who go through a lot together. They also never leave each other behind. This book doesn’t really remind me of any other books because it’s like a lot of different books combined into one.One of them is A Wrinkle in Time because they both travel through different worlds. I would rate the book five stars.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

imgres The book I read was written by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The main character is Mary Lennox. Mary was a girl who had a mother who only liked to go to parties and did not care about Mary. So, her mother gave Mary an Ayah (a nanny) to look after her. This made Mary very selfish and a person nobody would love or care about. Then cholera came to where she lived and her Ayah, mother, and father died. Then she was sent to Yorkshire to live with her Uncle Craven at Misselthwaite Manor. Which is where the book mainly takes place.

A really interesting part was when Mary heard about a garden at the manor that had been locked up for ten years. She also heard that Mr. Craven buried the key somewhere in the gardens. Another interesting part was when she heard a crying child and asked Martha ( Mrs. Medlock’s servant) what it was. She said it was the wind. But Mary knew it was a person. Mary is contrary because she once said that if a lot of people wanted her to do something she said she wouldn’t do it (even dying). She is also a lonely person because when a robin wanted to become friends with Mary she didn’t have any friends before that. She is also a nature lover because she loves gardening all kinds of flowers.

I thought this book was excellent because Mary learns what it’s like to have friends. There is also a lot of mysteries in Misselthwaite Manor. I would recommend this book because it has some pretty funny parts. Also everyone thinks of Mary in a different way. From one to five I would rate this four ½.

Ophelia an the Marvelous Boy

imgresThe book I read was Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy written by Karen Fox. The main character is Ophelia. In the book Ophelia’s father works at a museum and when she goes into a room while exploring the museum, she finds a boy behind a locked door. The boy does not have a name and he can never grow old and he tells her to find three keys to get out and defeat the ice queen. The book takes place in London, England on Christmas Eve.

There were some parts that I thought were interesting like there was a part when Ophelia has to find the second key and she goes into a room full of ghosts and one ghost named Kiera helps Ophelia get the key. Another part I thought was interesting was when a statue in the museum of a spanish warrior comes to life while Ophelia is looking for the boy’s sword to defeat the ice queen. Ophelia is an adventurous, brave, and outgoing person. She seems like that because she and the boy go through a lot together.

I really liked the book because It has magic and adventure. Ophelia and the boy help each other through all the problems.I would recommend this book because it’s a fun book about dark magic on Christmas Eve. It also has a lot of mystery.  From 1-5 I would rate it a 5.

Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George

The book I read was Julie of the Wolves written by Jean Craighead George. This book is part of a series called Julie. The main character is Miyax and she runs away from her home. Then she gets lost in the Arctic with no food and starts to live near a pack of wolves. After that she starts to examine the wolves to see how they communicate. She tries to communicate with some of the wolves to get food.  The book takes place in the Arctic and Alaska.

In this book Miyax talks about her past and her family which is very important because it explains why she is doing some things. She once talked about her father and how he communicated with the wolves one time when he went hunting and there was no game. He came back with a deer that the wolves gave him and he left soon after that to go hunt seals and he never came back. Miyax also says that she left home and was planning on going  to San Francisco to her pen pal. She takes a lot of risks in this book.  Miyax is adventurous, hopeful, and hard working because she is communicating with wolves which represents all of those traits.

I thought this book was pretty good because even though there were  some good parts there were some parts I didn’t really like. There were some parts that I thought were strange.  An example is, when Miyax was with the wolves, she noticed that one of them wasn’t staying with the pack.  I think wolves stay together as a pack and they don’t kick one of their kind out.   One of the parts I did like was when Miyax saw her reflection in a pond after weeks of being lost in the Arctic and she was surprised what a mess she was.   I would recommend this book because it is full of adventure.  It is an exciting book about a girl who survives months in the middle of nowhere.  This book reminds me of Hatchet, which was about a boy who gets in a plane crash  on his way to his mom and has to survive in the wilderness with a hatchet that his dad gave him. They are alike because they are both about surviving in the middle of nowhere.  From one to five, I would rate it three stars.
