Project by: Leanne Daley (11th Grade)
Project Advisor: James French
Student(s)’s Advisor(s): Kelly O’Shea

Description of the Project: I am doing a series of acrylic paintings of people without their faces you don’t know who it is, and it is their body, and written below is an insecurity about their body that they have. By taking out the face and having the written word it would draw attention to what the insecurity is, and having in a series format raises up all the different types of insecurities people can have.

Final Reflection on Learning:

As I continued to be in contact with people about the insecurities and noticing the variety of these insecurities.  I learned how many there really are, and they are all different sizes. Some people were insecure about their neck, which I had never even noticed in the years I’ve known them, and just the range of some of the smallest things on peoples bodies to their legs as a whole really opened my eyes to the challenges people put against themselves and how much time people spend at war with their bodies. For me and some other projects and struggles I have faced I realize that while a lot of my insecurities are valid, I am likely one of the only people , if not the only person, who notice them.

Update on Progress from Weeks 1-3 (include any photos or video if relevant):

We have made notes, edits, and plans to improve my first two paintings before moving on and we discussed how to make the painting flat but geometrically incorporating light and shadow into the focus body parts.

Update on Progress from Weeks 4-6 (include any photos or video if relevant):

I have had to retake some of the reference photos to get a better idea of the light and shadow, as well as going back to the original to look at the paintings in a more flat and geometric way, and the goal is not to recreate the photo, because that already exists, but to incorporate a style of art and painting with the project.

Final Reflection on Learning:

My biggest reflection came before I even started painting. As I was collecting photos and learning about people’s, I learned how many there really are, and they are all different sizes. Some people were insecure about their neck, which I had never even noticed in the years I’ve known them, and just the range of some of the smallest things on peoples bodies to their legs as a whole really opened my eyes to the challenges people put against themselves and how much time people spend at war with their bodies. As I continue this I am interested to see what else people consider insecurity. Also by only using the primary colors in the paintings, I have already learned a lot about color theory and skin tones. There are some finishing touches that I want to put on the completed paintings, such as finalizing the placement of the wording, but I like how they turned out.
