Description of the Project:

For my project, I decided to explore how the tumultuous years of the Trump administration impacted the Republican Party as a whole, and how the more traditional conservative movement has merged with the alt right to create the new GOP base.

Final Reflection on Learning:

Throughout this project, I learned a lot about the history of the modern Republican Party and how it has evolved since the time of Lincoln. My research mostly consisted of reading various articles in publications such as The Atlantic, The New Yorker, and The Washington Post, and taking relevant notes. I found this work to be very interesting and fulfilling because I was learning volumes about subjects that I usually don’t read about very often. I truly enjoyed working with Tom on this honors project, and intend to do one again in the near future.

Update on Progress from Weeks 1-3 (include any photos or video if relevant):

During the past few weeks, I have been doing research on the Trump era and the Republican party leadership’s recent steps to distance themselves from extremism. I have attached a google doc which contains all of my notes thus far, taken from various recent articles about this topIc. I look forward to conducting more research in the coming weeks, as well as zeroing in on what exactly the final result of my project will be, and how I will make that happen.

Update on Progress from Weeks 4-6 (include any photos or video if relevant):

During weeks 4-6 of my project, I continued to read various articles about Trump, focusing on how he gained control of the Republican Party and why he has such a strong and passionate base. I’ve also begun working on my final product, a google slides presentation that outlines the history of Republicans in America and the effect that Trump has had on the party. In the future, I look forward to finishing this presentation as well as examining what a future Republican Party would look like without Trump as a leader.

Update on Progress from Weeks 7-9 (include any photos or video if relevant):

During the final weeks of my honors project, I continued working on my google slides presentation. I spent a lot of time working to convert my research into more formal writing, and deciding what information was relevant for each particular slide. I have attached the finished product in the “Final Product” section of my project page, and am excited to share my work with everyone at the end of the trimester!.
