Final Reflection on Learning:

My reflection from this project would have to be recognizing the colossal difference between Chinese and English culture and grammar. Translating poetry from one language to another all whilst trying to express the same emotion was such a grueling process. Though, I’ve never felt more relief than when reading both of my finished poems in Chinese and in English and seeing the same emotions being played out so gracefully but yet so differently. I learned loads about myself and how I learn and had overall so much fun working passionately on something I love with a great project mentor to guide me.

Update on Progress from Weeks 1-3 (include any photos or video if relevant):

We finished my first poem and painting and have moved on to the second. Our routine is to meet every Friday after class to read over my first draft of the actual poem, translate keywords, put together sentences, brainstorm ideas for the painting that goes along with these poems, and finally make the painting. Collectively we hope to produce 2 poems and 2 paintings. I’ve learned to incorporate new words and phrases I’m learning in class and to put them to use in my poetry! So far, not only is this project furthering my knowledge about culture and history, but it’s also helping me practice and get better at Mandarin altogether.

Update on Progress from Weeks 4-6 (include any photos or video if relevant):

We finished my second poem and I’m currently working on my second painting. We changed the date since Friday meetings have been cut short but we’re still meeting weekly. We still use the same document to translate and brainstorm our thought processes and ideas. I’m learning more and more each time we meet and I cant wait to see what we come up with for our poster and slideshow!

Update on Progress from Weeks 7-9 (include any photos or video if relevant):

We finished my poster, paintings, translations, and everything else! Making the poster and slideshow was a challenging process given the time taken to discuss the theme and what feelings we want to give off with the whole presentation. We decided to go with a springy warm theme that would have a preview of the slideshow on the poster and include a QR link to the meat of our project.
