Project by: Jemma Fox (9th Grade), Emily Familetti (9th Grade)
Project Advisor: Stephen MacGillivray
Student(s)’s Advisor(s): Jemma – Joy and Emily- Pat

Our plan was to make a documentary about the question:

How does fashion affect people’s perception of others in our city, and
how do stereotypes apply to gendered clothing?

We interviewed our peers, strangers on the streets of NYC and even went to a photoshoot and interviewed fashion professionals. At the end of the film, we tried to draw some conclusions about how we think fashion affects New Yorkers and the differences in opinion that existed within different categories of people that we interviewed; we also wanted to understand why there were these differences in opinion. We hoped to learn about different people and their experiences relating to fashion. Fashion plays a large role in society and its something that we wanted to more deeply understand.

Reflection:

In this project, we learned that society is something that forces many people to conform. We discussed a lot of the norms and how some things are the general perception by people in New York some of these stereotypes include, that women are more devoted to fashion, and that clothing that is more revealing is “slutty” and is commonly perceived as unacceptable. We think that from gathering so much from so many people in many different forums we learned that these stereotypes don’t just apply to some members of our society and that they are a common opinion. This project has helped learn more about how what we wear carries more weight on how people view me than we ever anticipated. This experience has shown me that I learn more by taking action because I think that by being in the midst of things I have learned more than ever before. In the future, I would like to be more immersed in learning about issues in the world around me because I feel more motivated and I learn more. This has shown me that ethically and personally I must be cautious of what I assume and try to untrain my mind from seeing such a distinct line when it comes to clothing directed towards specific genders. This has been a learning experience for us, I now know that I am an effective learner when I actually become involved which is something I can surely apply to my studies.

PROJECT PROPOSAL

Please write a description of the project you are proposing. Why do you want to take this on, and what do you hope to learn?

Our plan is to make a documentary about the question: How does fashion affect people’s perception of others in our city, and how do stereotypes apply to gendered clothing? We interviewed our peers, strangers on the streets of NYC and even went to a photoshoot and interviewed fashion professionals. At the end of the film, we are going drew a conclusion on how we think fashion affects New Yorkers and the differences in opinion that exist within different categories of people that we interviewed and why. We hope to learn about different people and their experiences relating to fashion. Fashion plays a large role in society and its something that we want to further understand.

Critical thinking, creativity, citizenship, and courage are essential LREI learning values. Explain how you’ll draw on at least one of these values to complete your proposed project?

This is an example of creativity because, in the end, we will have made a documentary about a prominent question frequently proposed throughout our modern society. This video will have been all filmed and edited by us.

What is your proposed outcome? How will you be able to demonstrate successful completion of this Project? How do you plan to share your learnings with the larger LREI community (e.g., an exhibit of work, a poster of learnings, performance, etc.)?

We made a video documenting our experience, which exemplifies the whole process of our whole project.

Please provide a general outline that indicates your work plan for the trimester? What are some of the key project benchmarks (i.e., goals that will help to ensure that you finish the project)?

So we will begin by writing questions to ask people, then we will go and film and ask different people their opinions and once that is completed we will edit the film.

When do you plan on meeting?
We are going to meet on Monday at x-block in the media arts room
