Project Description

We will continue on our plan to play and practice jazz songs and perform at a coffeehouse. We are excited to advance our knowledge about jazz and improve at our respective instruments. We are looking forward to learning more about advanced jazz arrangements and improvising.

TRIMESTER 2 REFLECTION

Marlo: Throughout the course of the first trimester of this project, and continuing into this one, I have learned a lot. Not only about my instrument, but how to play as a small group, arrange music, and much more. Coming into this project, I didn’t have nearly as much experience playing drums as Milei does bass or Elijah does piano since saxophone is my primary instrument. Just a couple of weeks ago when we were sitting down for practice, I just started playing and immediately noticed the difference and improvement from the beginning of Trimester Two until today. It was satisfying to see that all of my work individually, and our work collectively, had grown so much. This project has been a great experience and I am excited to continue it in Trimester Three. Not only has it been an amazing learning opportunity, but now I have another thing to be grateful for on Fridays.

Elijah: I learned a ton last trimester about how to play with others. I’ve played piano for a long time, but this is my first time consistently playing in a group with others. It’s a completely different experience, as you have to learn to adapt to what others are playing. Listening to the other members in the group is the most important thing. At the beginning, I was just playing for myself, and assuming the others were doing their role. It’s important to listen to each other because then you can play off of what the others are doing and it makes the music sound much better. As a group, we have grown so much by listening to each other and improving together. I’m excited for all the improvement in Trimester 3!

Milei: Something I learned from this honors project was just digging deeper in being a combo and the elements that come with it. For me personally, I thought this was a great chance for me to look more into soloing and figure how to be more of a soloist as a bass player as well as supporting the rest of the band. It was a way and good chance for me of stepping out of my comfort zone. I also learned how to still have good sound and focus on how I project even though I am in a smaller group than I am usually used to being in. I am grateful for this opportunity to be able to improve on my soloing and improvement on my sound.

Please write a description of the project you are proposing. Why do you want to take this on, and what do you hope to learn?

We will play and practice jazz songs and perform one at a coffeehouse. We hope to learn more about jazz and improve at our respective instruments. We hope to learn more about advanced jazz arrangements and improvising.

Critical thinking, creativity, citizenship and courage are essential LREI learning values. Explain how you’ll draw on at least one of these values to complete your proposed project?

We will draw on creativity by experimenting and improvising along with possibly creating some of our own pieces.

What is your proposed outcome? How will you be able to demonstrate successful completion of this Project? How do you plan to share your learnings with the larger LREI community (e.g., exhibit of work, poster of learnings, performance, etc.)?

We will demonstrate completion by performing at a coffeehouse.

Please provide a general outline that indicates your work plan for the trimester? What are some of the key project benchmarks (i.e., goals that will help to ensure that you finish the project)?

Our goal is to have a repertoire of three or four solid songs. Our benchmark will be the end of Trimester Two when we will perform at the Founder’s Day Assembly.

When do you plan on meeting?
Every Friday (with Mr. D.) and at least one other time a week.
