Project by: Nika Marohnic (11th Grade), Sophie Kielian (11th Grade)
Project Advisor: Daniel Li
Student(s)’s Advisor(s): Shafeiq, Peggy

During the 2nd trimester, we did extensive research about the anatomy of the brain, specifically, how the brain processes information and memories. We learned how to create a scientific experiment by defining variables and ensuring that the results are as accurate as possible. Towards the end of the trimester, we carried out our experiment and collected the data. We wanted to continue our honor’s project into the 3rd trimester so that we could learn how to analyze scientific data and how to properly write a scientific paper.

PROJECT UPDATE:

Below are some of the resources we created to conduct our memory test. First, we wrote out our plan for the experiment. We wanted to make sure that we had a good foundation for the experiment so that we could be sure that our findings were as accurate as possible. We also have one of the memory tests that we gave to our student test subjects. We asked them to memorize as many words as possible, however the second time they came back to take the experiment we changed a certain variable (music and smell). In a spreadsheet, we kept track of our findings.

Next trimester, we plan to learn how to properly interpret this data and understand the results of our experiment. We also plan to learn how to effectively present scientific findings, such as in a paper or poster.

Project Proposal

Please write a description of the project you are proposing. Why do you want to take this on, and what do you hope to learn?

During the 2nd trimester, we have done extensive research about the anatomy of the brain, specifically, how the brain processes information and memories. We learned how to create a scientific experiment by defining variables and ensuring that the results are as accurate as possible. Towards the end of the trimester, we carried out our experiment and collected the data. We wish to continue our honor’s project into 3rd trimester so that we can have time to learn how to analyze scientific data and how to properly write a scientific paper.

Critical thinking, creativity, citizenship and courage are essential LREI learning values. Explain how you’ll draw on at least one of these values to complete your proposed project?

We would draw on critical thinking because we are researching the way our brain works, using that knowledge to create an experiment, and then interpreting that data.

What is your proposed outcome? How will you be able to demonstrate successful completion of this Project? How do you plan to share your learnings with the larger LREI community (e.g., exhibit of work, poster of learnings, performance, etc.)?

We want to create a scientific poster and write a paper which would include the research and then the findings from our experiment.

Please provide a general outline that indicates your work plan for the trimester? What are some of the key project benchmarks (i.e., goals that will help to ensure that you finish the project)?

1. Finish collecting data 2. learn how to analyze data and analyze it 3. learn how to write a paper and write it

When do you plan on meeting?
Sophie and Nika plan on meeting during Monday x-block and using that time as a work period. We plan on meeting with Daniel on Friday’s during lunch.
