In Trimester 2 I was able to begin the process of creating a comic book, a much more in-depth process then I thought it would be. I realized that I wouldn’t be able to get anywhere near to finishing the project, so I decided to extend it to Trimester 3. While working on the project throughout Trimester 3 I was able to move from the basic sketches in blue pencil on the small paper to mapping out the comic on a larger piece of paper. This starts the process of finalizing the storyline and also makes the image come out clearer if it is shrunken back down to book size. Instead of using the blue pencil, I worked lightly with a regular lead pencil trying to get the images as close as possible to the original blue pencil. I was able to finish this and in the last few days of possible work time, I began to add ink to the pages. This started with going over with an outline of the images, then starting to add in shadow with the ink.

T2 UPDATE:

Over the course of Trimester 2, I began work on my Honors project (creating a comic book). I learned that you can’t, in fact, dive straight into the drawing process, but instead have to carefully think it out. This included writing out a script of the five-page scene I was going to do, then editing parts of that. After finishing the script (kind of like a play script) I started the thumbsketch. This is a sketch of all five pages, in doing this you are trying to get a feel for what you want the layout to be, etc. James informed me that the reason why you do this sketch in blue pencil is that when you copy the drawing (drawing with regular lead on top of it), if you copy the page, or scan it, the blue pencil with all the mistakes doesn’t show up. I chose to continue this project into Trimester 3 because, I’m nowhere close to being done, and I want to at least get to inking for the end of Trimester 3.

T3 Project Proposal

Please write a description of the project you are proposing. Why do you want to take this on, and what do you hope to learn?

I hope to learn the process of creating a comic book. I will be creating a few pages of the beginning of the book.

Critical thinking, creativity, citizenship and courage are essential LREI learning values. Explain how you’ll draw on at least one of these values to complete your proposed project?

Creativity, because I’m literally drawing the comic book.

What is your proposed outcome? How will you be able to demonstrate successful completion of this Project? How do you plan to share your learnings with the larger LREI community (e.g., exhibit of work, poster of learnings, performance, etc.)?

I hope that the plot, dialogue, color, etc. is done by the end of T3. I will take a picture of the book to exhibit the work.

Please provide a general outline that indicates your work plan for the trimester? What are some of the key project benchmarks (i.e., goals that will help to ensure that you finish the project)?

Continue on the outline, add dialogue, possibly add color (I don’t know if I’ll have time).

When do you plan on meeting?
On days that I’m free

T2 Project Proposal

Please write a description of the project you are proposing. Why do you want to take this on, and what do you hope to learn?

I would like to try to create a comic book or at least a scene. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, but I never knew where to start. I think that this will be the perfect opportunity to try this kind of art.

Critical thinking, creativity, citizenship and courage are essential LREI learning values. Explain how you’ll draw on at least one of these values to complete your proposed project?

I feel like this project will very clearly draw on the value of Creativity.

What is your proposed outcome? How will you be able to demonstrate successful completion of this Project? How do you plan to share your learnings with the larger LREI community (e.g., exhibit of work, poster of learnings, performance, etc.)?

The proposed outcome would be a completed scene/short comic book. Dialogue, storyline, colored, etc. I’m pretty sure I would exhibit the art in some way because it is such a visible project.

Please provide a general outline that indicates your work plan for the trimester? What are some of the key project benchmarks (i.e., goals that will help to ensure that you finish the project)?

Solidify the storyline, create a dialogue that fit the characters, create a rough outline of the scene, then add details and add color.

When do you plan on meeting?
X-Block on Monday/Wednesday/Friday, and in March, possibly on Thursdays (I’ll have to see).
