Project by: Jane Brooks (11th Grade)

Please write a description of the project you are proposing. Why do you want to take this on, and what do you hope to learn?

Last year I did a project in which I took portraits of friends and family and then artistically arranged those photos on my tumblr account. This year I want to take it a a little further and not just take creative photos of people I love, but really try to capture the essence of people who inspire me, people who aren’t necessarily in my close circle as to push myself out of my comfort zone. I would most likely be doing this project alongside a cinematic project I plan on doing with my friend in which we would create shorts of genuine and interesting youth around the city, trying to capture them in a few minute video. I think it would be really cool to do these projects side by side because I would be on one hand capturing the person in photo and on the other hand capturing them on film.

Susan and I would work together during my Monday x-block and in the Wednesday open studio x-block.

What is your proposed outcome? How will you be able to demonstrate successful completion of this Project?

I want to have a substantial amount of prints and digital scans that Susan will help me arrange and publish, potentially even submitting them to competitions. Hopefully if all goes as planned, my cinematic project can be displayed alongside the portraits I take of these people. I think putting them together has the potential to be really powerful. I also want to improve my understanding of light and manual camera controls.
