What did we accomplish?

This trimester, Nelly and I have workshopped a scene and a monologue. We have worked through the text with Ann directing us, and providing useful insights into the language.

We dived into the text, researching the significance of spelling and punctuation. We also did some cold readings of Shakespearean scenes, using gender-bending. When we started working on the scene we explored the power dynamic between our characters and used it to inform our blocking. Ann helped us facilitate natural movement in the scene, and taught us how to pass the energy between us.

Our plan for the future:

We will continue to work next trimester, expanding our repertoire of scene and monologues, bring more student actors in to work with us. We are hoping to host an evening this spring of Shakespearean scenes, monologues, and taped works with performances by actors at LREI who have expressed interest in the past. Nelly and I will continue to play with Shakespeare through next trimester, and flex our directing muscles by working with other students.

PROPOSAL:

Please write a description of the project you are proposing. Why do you want to take this on, and what do you hope to learn?

This project will be a workshop on scenes and monologues written by William Shakespeare. We will memorize monologues and scenes and come in to work on them with Ann’s and each other’s direction. We will explore the text; the rhetoric, imagery, and themes used, as well as the characters in the scene for a better understanding of the work.

What is your proposed outcome? How will you be able to demonstrate successful completion of this Project?

By the end of the project, we will have approximately 3 polished monologues and 1 or 2 scenes that we have analyzed and can share.
