Please write a description of the project you are proposing. Why do you want to take this on, and what do you hope to learn?

ASL and Audism is a trimester long honors project where Rachel Morrow will continue to teach Dariel Fernandez American Sign Language and deaf culture. We will additionally be exploring the audism within our society and school, while looking at the ways in which it marginalizes the deaf community. We will be meeting once a week on Thursday’s during lunch.

What is your proposed outcome? How will you be able to demonstrate successful completion of this Project?

The outcome of this project is to advance Dariel’s signing abilities and understanding of deaf culture, and for both of us to learn more about how the dominance of hearing culture perpetuates audism. We will be able to demonstrate successful completion of this project through showing Dariel’s proficiency in ASL and through a paper displaying what we learned about audism within our society.
