Sitting on the Edge
It’s 7:50 and I am waiting for the 8:00 am workshop to begin. A quick look around and I notice how many of us, yes I am guilty, are sitting on the edge of the rows. In fact, of the 20+ people already in the room, only one brave soul sat smack in the middle of the row. I know the many reasons why I might sit on the edge, do you?
- fastest exit to the restroom
- fastest exit when the workshop is over
- if I am towards the exit and I want to attend another workshop, it is the most respectful way to exit
- if the description does not add up to the experience, I don’t want to commit to the workshop by sitting in the middle
- if I am feeling challenged by the content, which is probably why I sat down in the first place, I can quickly exit and reflect or find a “safe space” and ignore the feelings
- I won’t have to engage in dialogue if I am sitting on the edge and away from others
