The book The House On Mango Street is a book of short stories about a poor-ish girl named Esperanza, who has moved many times and her latest move was to Mango Street. She has no friends at first, but starts to make some as the stories go on. There is one girl in the Neighborhood who thinks she is related to the queen of France she is very wealthy and whenever people like Esperanza moves in she moves a little bit farther away from the neighborhood. There are many people who speak Spanish living on mango street even though it is a place in America. Esperanza dreams and imagines a lot because she knows that she is not living in a very “wealthy” neighborhood. Esperanza feels that Mango Street is not the right place for her and hopes to have a house of her very own one day.
My favorite part of the book is when they were talking about a boy named Louie well one of his cousins stole a car and the kids didn’t know so when Louie’s cousin told everyone to get out of the car and when the police took him away the kids were just waving and saying see you later. That is my favorite part because it is to me at least laugh out loud moment.
My least favorite part of the book is the first story which is about when Esperanza first explains her and her life. I didn’t like that part because it is really sad for example she was giving many clues that she was poor. It was really sad.
I really liked the book because it is both funny sad and expressive in many ways. I also like the book because it tells me that I am more lucky than I think I am. Another reason I liked the book is how the author really used kid language to explain what is going on in a kids mind.
I recommend this book to people who like sad and funny life stories. I would give this book 5 out of 5 stars!
