Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan

This book is called Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan. This book is part of the Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard series. The book is about a kid named Magnus Chase who finds out that the Asgardian gods are real and that he is a son of Freya the Goddess of Fire. This book tells the story of him “dying” and saving the world. The setting is in the U.S.A. and other dimensions. It takes place in 2016.

Magnus is strong, warm and brave. He is strong because he survived a river that was going about 100 miles per hour. He survived by luck. He is warm because he is a son of Freya the Goddess of Fire and he is welcoming to other people. An example was when he welcomed a evil dwarf. He is brave because he fought and killed (temporarily) an “unkillable” wolf. This was brave because no one had ever killed this wolf and Freya is not a fighter.

In Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: The Sword of Summer a part that I found interesting was when I found out how Thor actually looks versus how he looks in the comics with gold hair. He actually has a red beard and red hair. Another thing that was interesting was when Magnus was Magnus was on ship made out of toenails, on the ship was Magnus had a chat with Loki and Loki, “Oh we aren’t actually here i’m still on a rock with snake poison dripping in my eye and you’re still in the river probably dying. our souls are able to be here because these toenails contain our ancestors DNA which allows us to be here.” This was interesting to me because you never would expect someone to be on a ship made of toenails and that it’s cool and strange.

I enjoyed Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: the Sword of Summer because I like the way Rick Riordan. I really like the dialogue in the book because it makes me feel like I’m in the story.  For example: “Your father’s name was Billy, right?” said Fenris in a scratchy voice (I cannot tell you who Fenris is or else it will ruin the story. He’s a big part of it) This was descriptive because it felt like I was hearing the voice. Another reason I enjoyed this book is because it was funny. For example: one chapter name was called “Oh so that’s who Fenris smelled in chapter sixty three.” Another thing that was funny was when you meet someone named Thomas Jefferson Jr. ,TJ for short. This is funny because it’s like this the son of Thomas Jefferson is alive but Thomas Jefferson died in the 1700s well this take place in 2017! I recommend this book because it explains everything and always leaves you hanging no matter where you are. Another reason I recommend this book because it always is positive no matter where you are. This meant that Magnus was always finding the silver outline. This book reminds me of the Avengers because in Avengers there is Asgard, Thor, Loki and Balder the Brave. In Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: the Sword of Summer there is Asgard, Thor, Loki and Balder the Brave. (You never meet Balder the Brave.) I would give this book a three and a half star rating because there was way too much talking and not a lot of action.

The Blood of Olympus, by Rick Riordan

I read a book called The Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan. This book is part of a series called The Heroes Of Olympus. The book/series takes place in 2016 and a bunch of places I can’t even list, but it mostly takes place in Italy, Greece, America and Tartarus. The main character’s names in the book/series are: Hazel, Leo, Percy, Annebeth, Frank, Jason and Piper. In the book, seven demigods take a journey to Athens, Greece to fight/send back to Tartarus/kill giants (the sons and daughters of Gaea, the earth goddess who was the first goddess to live that is evil) to stop them from waking Gaea. The giants needed two demigods blood spilled on the Parthenon (which is where Poseidon, the Greek god of water and hurricanes and Athena, the Greek god of wisdom and weaving, did something to declare who Athens would be named after and Athena won) to waken Gaea. Before the demigods get to Athens, Greece, they make a few stops they might need. But they don’t just get together and try to save the world, there’s a whole story to it.

One of the most interesting characters is Annebeth. She’s smart. I mean, she’s a daughter of Athena, the goddess of wisdom. Of course she’s smart. She’s strategic. When you’re smart, you’re also strategic. She once broke her leg and she didn’t have a boot or anything like that. She had to make a boot made out of a piece of wood and bubble wrap and she had to use sticks for crutches. She’s brave. She fell into Tartarus (a pit where Greek and Roman monsters come back to life. Tartarus was also the first god to live) and didn’t even have a heart attack.

The demigods didn’t just have to stop Gaea from waking. They had to do much much more than that. They had to bring a statue to Camp Halfblood (a sleep away camp where Greek demigods stay to be protected from monsters) and set it on Halfblood Hill to stop a war between Greek demigods and Roman demigods. One of the most interesting parts of the book is that the seven demigods had to get a cure that can heal you from death. You can not come back to the human world death. You stay dead. Another interesting part of the book was that Leo could make killer robots try to kill themselves. It’s called idiot mode. Another interesting thing that happened in the book was that the giants didn’t spill Annebeth and Percy’s blood on the Parthenon right away. That’s interesting because the giants want to be the rulers of the world. The only way they can do that is with Gaea.

This book is probably one of my favorite books out of the many books I’ve read. You will literally fall in love with this book (which I did). If you like the Percy Jackson series, you will love this book. There are relationships, like relationships in the Percy Jackson series (which I mean girlfriend- boyfriend relationships). It has similar writing, and it’s a mix between Greek mythology and Roman. It has everything. It’s action packed and fantasy (just like Percy Jackson). One of my favorite parts of the book was when Leo tricked nymphs into thinking Leo was more handsome than Narcissus (who is crazily handsome). In case you don’t know, a nymph is a nature spirit. I liked that part because tricking nymphs into thinking you’re hotter than the hottest person in the world is pretty darn hilarious! Imagine looking at the poor guy’s face. It was probably red with envy. I rate this book five stars. That’s why I want you to read this book.

Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson (retold by Chris Tail)

Treasure Island
is by Robert Louis Stevenson and retold by Chris Tail. Treasure Island takes place around the 1880s. The setting is at sea and on two islands, Bone Island and Treasure Island. The main character is named Jim Hawkins. The story is Jim trying to get to Treasure Island, and how the crew and one captain named Long John Silver are kind of bad. It also is about living the life of a pirate.

In Treasure Island Jim is a brave, determined, and smart 9 year old boy. He was brave because he dared to journey across the sea from his home town. Jim was a determined boy because he was intrigued by Treasure Island and wanted to avenge a captain. He was a very smart because he used a map to find Treasure Island and its coordinates.

Meeting Long John Silver was an important part because it made getting to Treasure Island really difficult. Long John Silver was the only thing stopping them from finding Treasure Island because he was greedy. Bone Island was an important event because that is when they were able to find the exact location of where Treasure Island was (at first they only knew where the area was) and they got rid of Long John Silver by leaving him on a Island. These events were interesting because when you first meet Long John Silver all you hear is he’s mean but later Jim experiences it and knows how mean he actually is. He is the description of mean.

Treasure Island was a very good book because on Bone Island Jim wandered into the forest and found and listened to important information, it was very interesting and super intense which I liked. Treasure Island was also a good book because Jim gets tortured and he also got some experience with fighting. I recommend Treasure Island because when you read it gives you the tiniest details which makes everything better. This book reminds me of the starting of Spongebob Squarepants when the pirate is there. It reminded me of the starting of Spongebob Squarepants because at the beginning there is a pirate and throughout Treasure Island there were pirates. I’ll give it a 5 star rating.

The Lost Hero By Rick Riordan.

I am reading a book called The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan. It is in the Heroes of Olympus series. It is about a boy named Jason, his friend Leo, and Jason’s girlfriend Piper. They are half- bloods. Half god, half human. They go to a camp called Camp Half-Blood. They go on adventures and fight monsters to try and find Percy Jackson. The three go to many places to look for Percy but do not find him. Yet. Greek monsters come to the modern age and it’s up to Jason, Piper, and Leo to stop it.

Jason is brave, confident, and smart. Jason is brave because he accepted the challenge of going on the quest. He is confident because even though he was badly hurt by a venti, or storm spirit, he still fought it. He is smart because he knew he was in danger when the venti came and he knew how to stop it.

Two parts of the book that I found interesting were when Jason, Piper, Leo, Annabeth, and Butch are on a chariot driven by pegasi and one of the wheels catches on fire. I liked this part because it made me stay on my heels and wonder what was going to happen. Another interesting part was when Jason went to the Big House and talked to a goddess. This was interesting because I wasn’t sure what was going to happen to him and it made me want to read more.

I really enjoyed the book. I enjoyed it because it has lots of adventure and action. I also enjoyed it because of the fun surprises. I would really recommend this book because of all the reasons above, the suspense, and the characters. Also, the humor is great. This book reminds me of The Kane Chronicles. It reminds me of it because there are Gods and mythical creatures coming to America. Also in both series all the main characters go on a quest and fight monsters. I would give this book a four star rating. It’s really good.

The War That Saved My Life, by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

The War That Saved My Life is about WWII happening in London. Kids had to leave London for their safety because of bombing. They had to go to the countryside and move in with random people. The character the book is focusing on is a girl named Ada Smith. She has a twisted foot and a very cruel mother. The mother keeps Ada locked up in her apartment by herself. Ada sneaks off to the countryside with her little brother Jamie because her mom was being to mean to her. They were forced upon a pretty nice woman named Susan Smith. Then when they all are there they learn to love each other

Ada Smith is brave, nervous and resilient. She is brave because she was strong enough to sneak away from her mother and walk very far without stopping. She is also brave because she taught herself how to ride a pony. She is nervous because in the book she gets scared, angry or nervous about what other people do. She is resilient because WWII is happening and she is following everything other people say to do, to stay safe.

One of the most interesting parts in the book is when Ada learns to write because she asks a lot of questions about what words mean. So learning to write might help her to understand those words and it will help her learn to read. Another interesting part of the story is when the villager tells all the other villagers that if they put up black curtains in the night the German spies will not see anything when they come to invade.

I definitely enjoyed this book because it is a very interesting part of history. Even though Ada Smith is a made up character, kids actually were sent to the countryside to stay with a stranger. It is such an interesting and unique book because of its theme and I have never read a book about WWII. I would definitely recommend book if you like realistic fiction or history books. Ada Smith is unique because she has a clubfoot and she has to survive through WWII. I would give The War That Saved My Life a five star rating because it is so amazing.

PAX By Sara Pennypacker and Jon Klassen

The book I read was Pax by Sara Pennypacker and it is illustrated by Jon Klassen. It is realistic fiction and there are some nice illustrations. This book is about a boy named Peter who has a pet fox named Pax. They are inseparable, but when Peter’s father goes off to war, he forces Peter to abandon Pax in in the forest. The story starts as Peter drives to the forest and leaves Pax. Then Peter has to live with his grandfather while his father is fighting in the war. Peter realizes it was wrong to leave Pax and decides to go on a journey to find him. The main characters are Peter, Pax, some foxes that Pax meets, and a later, a character that Peter meets: Vola. Pax is set in modern times. It is set in a very big forest, Vola’s farm, and the road to the forest where Pax is while Peter is trying to find him.

In this book Peter is the main character. Peter is brave, determined, and strong. He is brave because he went on the journey alone. The journey is dangerous and he does not think he will have help. He is determined because he knows he will find Pax no matter what. He even wants to keep looking for him when he breaks his leg. He is strong because he gets hurt a lot, for example, breaking his leg and he never cries.

After Peter breaks his leg Vola finds him and takes Peter to her farm to help him. Peter is there for a lot of the book. Breaking his leg causes him to live at the farm for a while and that is why it is an important event. Another interesting part of this book is when Pax first meets the other foxes. It makes the reader want to learn more about the foxes, but the reader can’t learn more about the foxes right at that time because the chapter is over. This is because in this book each chapter switches from Pax’s perspective to Peter’s perspective. For example, in the chapter Pax meets the foxes the reader will be reading about Pax and the foxes but the next chapter will be about Peter.

I enjoyed the book because it was suspenseful. I also liked this book because it was hard to know what was going to happen next. For example, I never knew Peter would break his leg and someone would find him and take him to live at a farm. I would recommend this book because it is an adventure, but it does have some violence. Sometimes the violence can be a little intense. Also the pictures are really pretty. Pax has 276 pages so it probably won’t take too long to finish. Pax reminds me of The Good Dinosaur, because in that movie, Arlo, the main character, is far from home on a journey to to get back home. Arlo has a pet Spot, who he loves. Spot reminds me of Pax because he is the main character’s best friend. Arlo the dinosaur reminds me of Peter because they are both main characters on a long journey. Then Arlo meets some T-rex’s who help Arlo get home and they let Arlo and Spot stay with them. The T-rex’s remind me of  Vola because Vola helps Peter and they help Arlo. The T-rex’s help Arlo get home and they let Arlo and Spot stay with them. The T-rex’s remind me of Vola because Vola helps Peter and the T-rex’s help Arlo. I would rate this book 4 stars.

Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton

Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton fits its name perfectly. This is because this book is about a park that recreates animals from the Jurassic period. What kind of animals am I talking about? DINOSAURS!!! There are a lot of characters in Jurassic Park. The characters are (and some were, I mean that some of the characters died) Dr. Grant and Dr. Sattler. They are both paleontologists. There is John Hammond who runs the whole park, and his scientist Dr. Wu. There is the lawyer who is part of Ingene. Ingene is an evil corporation that wants to steal the dinosaurs. His name is Genaro. There is an inspector named Malcolm who is figuring out if the park is safe for visitors. He is a scientist that studies chaos theory. Then there is Tim and Lex who are John Hammond’s kids. And Ed Regis who is a scientist who is helping the kids. Jurassic Park  tells the story of an experiment to bring life back to the dinosaurs, a miraculous discovery. But the electric fences have been turned off and the Dinosaurs escape. They start breeding and that slowly leads to the end of the island. Or at least that is my prediction. Set on a tropical island, somewhere near Costa Rica, Jurassic Park takes place in a dangerous park that is filled with bloodthirsty dinosaurs.

Dr. Grant is very intelligent and knows all about dinosaurs. He survived in tough situations, like when the electric fences turned off and they were stuck in the car right next to the tyrannosaur exhibit. The tyrannosaur destroyed the car killing some of the main characters, but Alan Grant survived by not moving a muscle. The dinosaur couldn’t see him while he stood still so the tyrannosaur roared, trying to scare Grant and make him move, but Grant didn’t move, and he and the kids escaped. The plot of the book is that John Hammond hires a lot of people to do all the engineering and complex computers. One person (who dies eventually) who works with the big computer turns off all the power so the electric fences go out and the dinosaurs escape. This person is Dennis Nedry, who is bribed by Dodgson, the founder of Biocon, (an evil corporation competing with Ingene). Alan Grant finds the eggshell of a velociraptor, which means they are breeding, even though Wu has made all the dinosaurs female. When the dinosaurs escape, the velociraptors, the most dangerous dinosaurs, escape.

IF YOU DO NOT WANT FOR ME TO SPOIL THE BOOK DO NOT READ THIS PART.

They kill some of our characters John Arnold who works with the computers, Dennis Nedry (the guy who let the dinosaurs out) trying to steal the dinosaur DNA, and Henry Wu. Then the velociraptors trap Ellie Sattler, Muldoon, Henry Wu, (before he dies) John Hammond and Ian Malcolm, who is badly injured. When the velociraptors are about to chew through the final bar, Tim, Lex, Grant and Gennaro turn the power back on. The velociraptors go for Grant, Tim, Lex and Gennaro but I will tell you about that  later with Grant and his great plan.

YOU CAN READ ON NOW.

I LOVED Jurassic Park!!!  It was so full of action and suspense. I loved the part where the energy was turned off and the T-Rex got loose in the middle of the night, with the tour car right in front of his exhibit. The other part that I LOVED was when Grant had this awesome plan. Grant, Tim, Lex and Gennaro were cornered in the hatchery so Gennaro, Tim and Lex hid while Grant got the poison that was in the hatchery. Grant put the poison inside the dinosaur’s eggs. Then he rolled them toward the velociraptors. They ate the eggs and then saw Grant. They all headed for Grant when one of the three velociraptor’s mouth started foaming with bubbles. There was a chain reaction and they all died. But before the last one perished it nearly nicked Grant’s chest.

I recommend this book greatly to anyone who doesn’t get scared of blood and enjoys dramatic things. And you need to be able to stick to this book because it is a long book and it has some lengthy passages that may be boring about dinosaur DNA that you might not understand. There are not really much connections to my life in this book because this book is fantasy. I have never read a book that talks so much about the DNA of dinosaurs, to keep track of them and to keep them under control. Actually I have never really read a bloody dramatic book that has dinosaurs in it! I would rate Jurassic park… FIVE stars. Yes, I loved this book. It had all the qualities of a book that I would want to read. And of course I would really want to read this book again. Sure it may take a while, but Jurassic Park was amazing. You should read it. If you have the Jurassic instinct that is!

Coraline, by Neil Gaiman.

My book is called Coraline and the author is Neil Gaiman. The main character in my books name is Coraline, she likes to explore. Coraline has a great house it is so big and spacey, so her house is definitely the right place to explore. My book takes place in Littlemead, England in 1987. The house is very colorful, the colors of the house are are purple and white.

Coraline is an explorer she is determined and smart. She is an explorer because she likes to go looking around, some of her neighbors said not to go to the well but she still did. She is determined because she wants to get her parents back from her other mother. She is smart because she is careful and cares, she won’t let anyone touch her if there strangers.

Two parts of this story I enjoyed were when Coraline wrote a story it was about a girl named Apple she loved to dance and then her feet turned into sausages. The other part is when the other mother ate the black beetles out of a little bag.

I really enjoyed this book because I like books that are scary interesting and like when there is a lot of exploring. I definitely recommend this book it’s never boring so that is why. I think Harry Potter is kinda like this book, because they explore and they don’t get paid attention to that much. I would rate this book a five out of one to five stars!

The Heroes Of Olympus: The Mark Of Athena By Rick Riordan

I read The Mark of Athena by Rick Riordan. I think the most important part of the book is when the Greeks meet the Romans because it did or didn’t start a war between the Greeks and Romans. I also think that was important because it’s what starts the prophecy to save the world from the earth goddess Gaea waking. The book is full of action, fantasy, secrets and mystery. The book is part of a series and the series is the best series I’ve ever read: The Heroes of Olympus.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling

imgresThe Harry Potter series is by J.K. Rowling is a really magical book series. The book takes place in Hogwarts, and the main characters are Harry, Hermione, and Ron. This book is different than the ones before, because there is a twist at the end and it will surprise you. You should still read the series in order, because, if you don’t, you’ll get confused by a lot of things in the books. On a scale of one to five, I’d give this book a four because the book is really magical, but I was a little disappointed: I wanted something to happen that didn’t happen. The book is magical because there are so many cool creatures, spells, wizards, witches, and mysteries. Enjoy the book review comic!
