Out of my Mind by Sharon M Draper

The book I read is called Out of my Mind by Sharon M Draper. The book is about a girl named Melody who has cerebral palsy, a disease that doesn’t allow you to talk or walk. In her head she knows so many things but she can’t let the world know because she has no way to talk. Everyone at her school is normal except for the room H-5 where all the kids who have disabilities stay, including Melody. When she moves up to middle school she had inclusion classes that allows her to get along with the other kids. But soon enough she gets a device that helps her talk called a medi-talker. She names it Elvira. The books takes place in Ohio, mostly at her house or her school.

Melody is special, smart, and nice. Melody is special because ever since she was a few months old, things stuck to her and every moment had a word to go with it. She is smart because she knows a lot of things. Anything she learns stick to her because she has a great memory. But know one knows. Melody is nice because she cares about other people. She is thankful for everyone who helps her do things for her. Melody has a hard time eating and drinking by herself. That is why she is nice.

In the book Melody gets a medi-talker that she names Elvira. It helps her talk in school and at home so she can respond for the first time in her life when people talk to her. But she gets jealous because her sister Penny can walk and talk normally, and she can’t even speak one sentence from herself not from a machine. I think that’s interesting because a lot of people in the world can talk and walk, but some people can’t and it makes me think how lucky I am to have a pair of legs and a working mouth. In the middle the book Melody takes a test to determine if she can be part of the quiz team that takes place in the book. But when they leave to perform on live TV in Washington, they leave without Melody. I thought that was interesting because Melody was the smartest one on the team. That’s what I think made the team loose when she wasn’t there with the rest of the team in Washington DC. Those are two things I found interesting. One quote that would be good to describe the main character would be: “All of my memories have words, and all my words and meanings. But only in my head.” I think this describes the main character because she has a lot of memories and all of them stuck with her throughout her whole life. But she couldn’t tell anyone because they were only in her head.

I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed this book because it was from a point of view from someone different that you would usually see. It taught me how lucky I should be that I can you talk and walk properly. I would recommend this book to anyone because it seem special in a way that I can’t explain. Like I’ve known it in a different universe. This book sort of reminds me of Wonder because August, the main character tries to fit in in school. So does Melody, they both wish they could be normal like everyone else around them. I would rate this book four stars out of five stars which means I really liked it.

Dork-Dairies by Rachel Renee Russell

The book I read is called Dork Diaries-Tales From A Not So Fabulous Life. This book is part of a series called Dork Diaries. The book is about this girl named Nikki who just moved to a new school. In the new school she moved to she is not so popular. The book usually takes place in her private school called Weschester Country Day. I think this book takes place in 2016.

Nikki is pessimistic, lonely, and embarrassed. Nikki is a pessimist because when she moves to her new school she always thinks about how lame she is because she has no friends until the middle of the book. She is lonely because she has no friends for a long period and is sad about that because when she trips in the lunch cafeteria no one stands up for her and that sortof shows how lonely she is.  Nikki is embarrassed because when she moves to her new school all the kids made fun of her when she fell on the floor.

I thought it was interesting how the popular kids from Westchester Country Day school only liked Nikki when she started making temporary tattoos for other people. I thought it was interesting because nobody should like someone because they’re cool and popular. They should like them for who they are. I think it was important how Nikki’s life completely changed when she moved to a different school and it took her on a different path. It was important because it is hard for someone to start a new life in a different school and have new friends. I can really get this situation because when I moved to my new school I had to learn how to fit in and make new friends.

In my opinion the book was okay. I thought it was okay because I sort of knew what was going to happen when I got close to the middle of the book. She moved to a new school, had to make new friends, and try to fit in. It was sort of obvious, I would of liked to not know what would happen. I’m probably not going to read the next book in the series because I didn’t like it that much. I would not recommend this book because of what I said about it being obvious but that’s just my opinion. The book reminds me of Popularity Papers. It reminds me of Popularity Papers because they’re sort of the same because they’re both realistic fiction and books that are funny and have a lot of drama. If I could rate this book on a scale threw one to five I would rate it a 2 because It wasn’t a good book in my opinion and I would like there to be more of a story.

Wonder by R.J Palico

The book I read is called Wonder by R.J Palacio. The book is about a boy named August Pullman who was born with a facial difference. He has to learn how to fit in, and make new friends in his first year of actually going to school at Beecher Prep. This book takes place in present time in New York City.

August is brave, nervous and extraordinary. August is brave because he is willing to give school a try even know he might go through some tough times. August is nervous because he is scared people won’t want to be his friend or that he won’t fit in. You sort of have to realize as a new kid that it can be hard especially when you were born with a deformed face. August is extraordinary because he goes to school for the first time and does his best to fit In and that is very hard. I think that that is very special.

I thought it was interesting when August and a couple of friends got beaten up in the woods and some kids that were sort of grossed out by August came and stood up for them. I thought it was interesting because it was really surprising and I didn’t see it coming. I didn’t expect it like in the other book I read. In the other books I read I sort of knew what was going to happen. I also thought it was interesting how August’s friend Jack stood up for him by punching a boy who was making fun of August. It was interesting because at that time they weren’t best friends yet. He almost got expelled from doing that and I think it was sweet in a violent way. My favorite quote in the book is when August keeps doubting himself and his mom says to him “You’re not ordinary you’re extraordinary!” I think that this quote describes him well because he went though a lot during his school year and was very brave. It was a lot of pressure but he got threw it and he very extraordinary for that.

I enjoyed his book a lot, it’s probably my favorite book. It is my favorite book because it’s just so unique, the story that is told and the lessons that are learned in this book is just really interesting because they teach you more things in this book then in usual books. I would recommend this book for sure, it is rally unique in its own way. I would read it a thousand times if I had to. I’m really excited for the movie that is coming out this November! I want to see what the characters will look like especially August. Hope there will be a commercial soon. On a scale from one to five, one meaning I didn’t like that much, five meaning I really liked I want to read it again, I would rate it five stars of course! Hope you can get a chance to read this as well.

When You Reach Me, by Rebecca Stead

When You Reach Me is a good mystery novel that I read. The book is by Rebecca Stead. It’s all about how Miranda receives letters from some mystery person. Miranda learns who to avoid in her neighborhood by sixth grade like one crazy guy on the corner. This book takes place where she lives, in school and around her neighborhood. I would recommend this book for people who like mysteries!

Miranda is curious, adventurous and brave.  Miranda is curious because she likes to know what’s going on around her and she has so many questions in her head that she wants to answer, like when someone keeps writing her letters and she doesn’t know who it is. I like that about her. Miranda is calm because when she reads the letters, she doesn’t tell anyone and doesn’t go crazy about it because she was told not to. Miranda is brave because when boys gang up on her or her friends, she stands up for them. I like that about her because she’s being an ally.

One of the most interesting parts of the book is when Miranda figures out who she gets the letters from. It was also interesting when Miranda’s best friend Sal got punched in the stomach because one of the boys just decided that he wanted to see what would happen if he did that. I think it wasn’t cool how Sal got mad at Miranda for no reason.  It was interesting because he said he really just needed a break from their friendship which is why he didn’t talk to her for a while. He knew that his only friend was a girl and he wanted more boy friends to hang out with.

I enjoyed the book When You Reach Me. I enjoyed it because I liked how I had to figure out what was going to happen next, and who was writing the letters to Miranda. I would recommend this book to people who like mysteries and figuring things out like a puzzle. I find Miranda a unique character because she starts something she doesn’t give up. I really like that about her that’s why I read this book in the first place. I also heard that the book was really good from a lot of my friends. On a scale from one to five I would give this book three stars which would mean it was pretty good. But it is not my favorite book. I think people should read this book!

The Fourteenth Goldfish By Jennifer L. Holm

A Brilliant Discovery

The book i’m reading is The Fourteenth Goldfish by  Jennifer L. Holm. The most important event so far in the book is when Ellie’s grandfather injects himself with a liquid in a Jellyfish that causes anti-aging and he then appears as a 14 year old boy. Ellie’s grandfather is a scientist and talks about things that she does not yet know about, but after living with him for a few months she starts finding her inner science. It is important because her grandfather inspires her to be a scientist later on in her life. I think this is a great book to read because it will teach you new things . This was a good book, you should go read it!
