The First Last Day By Dorian Cirrone

The title of the book is The First Last Day. The author is Dorian Cirrone. This book is about a girl named Haleigh who never wants the summer to end. But she has to be careful what she wishes for because she finds a set of oil paints and decides to use them. When she uses them, she makes a wish that the summer will never end. The wish comes true. But instead of it being a good wish, it turns into a bad wish and the same day repeats over and over and over again. Haleigh gets bored because every day she has to do the same thing. She hangs out with her best friend Kevin, but she also finds out that her mom may be pregnant and Kevin’s grandma gets a stroke every night. When that keeps on repeating, Haleigh tries to undo the wish so that she can meet her baby brother or sister. Kevin, her best friend, helps her by figuring out where the oil paints came from and how to undo the spell. This book takes place on the New Jersey shore in a beach town. I believe this is happening in modern times because it has a boardwalk and cell phones.

Haleigh in kind, determined, and fearful. She is kind because she never gets extremely angry. When she knows Kevin wants a DVD disc to watch a movie, the next day she takes her dad’s wallet and buys the movie for Kevin because she cares a lot about Kevin. She is determined because when the day keeps on getting repeated over and over, she doesn’t give up. She just keeps on going. Although it’s not that easy for her, at the end everything still turns out alright. Finally, she is fearful because she thinks that when the summer ends she won’t see Kevin again and this makes her a little worrisome. This is why Haleigh is kind, determined, and fearful.

This book is mainly about Haleigh wanting the summer to never end, but also not wanting to repeat the same day over and over. One part of the book that I thought was interesting was when Kevin jumped out with a cow suit and they started saying puns about cows. It was really funny. During this scene, Haleigh said a pun and this is what it is, “I eyed him up and down. ‘I see you beefed up your wardrobe.’” This helps me understand that Haleigh is very funny because she said a pun that I laughed at when I was reading it. One thing that I thought was pretty interesting was when Haleigh and Kevin were writing down all of the suspects for who gave Haleigh the oil pants. Kevin kept thinking that it was Marty the Magician. When they asked Marty, he said no. So Kevin was wrong. This was important because their plan backfired and I can imagine being shocked when this happened.

I really enjoyed the book because it was hilarious. It made me laugh out loud. The reason why is because the book had so many puns and the characters both had a really good sense of humor. Another reason that I liked the book was because there were moments that really touched me. For example, when Haleigh felt sad because Kevin’s grandma kept on having a stroke. I would definitely recommend this book. I would recommend this book for kids who like sad, funny, and happy stories because it’s a combination of all of those put together. It’s also about time travel and magic and I think how they put reality and magic together was very cool. This book is a little bit like The Invisible Day because Haleigh is also as determined as Billie to undo magic. I would give this book three stars because it was pretty good but I didn’t love it. It just didn’t interest me as much as some other books.

George By Alex Gino

I read the book George by Alex Gino. The book takes place in modern times in New York City. George, the main character, struggles to understand who she really is. She feels like a girl, but looks like a boy. George is scared to explain her true feelings to her mom. She feels insecure about herself. At school George tries out for the school play, Charlotte’s Web. George really wants to be Charlotte in the play, but when her best friend, Kelly gets the part instead of George, she gets extremely disappointed. George and Kelly do not speak to each other for a while, but finally they start to talk again and when they do,  they think of a plan to show the world that George is a girl and not a boy. The plan is to reveal George and not Kelly as the girl role of Charlotte during the second performance of the evening. George is so happy to be able to show the world who she really is, a girl.

George is shy, resilient, and forgiving. George is shy because she never has the guts to tell her mom how she really feels inside, especially about wanting to be a girl and not a boy. George is resilient because when she does not get the girl part, she never gives up. George shows the director that her want for a girl part is no joke. She stands up for what she believes in, even if others do not understand. George is forgiving because when Kelly gets the part that George wants, George takes a moment to be upset and then forgives her by moving on without letting the situation escalate into a big deal.

Although this book is serious, I found one part to be funny.  The mean boy in George’s class named Jeff makes fun of the Charlotte role in the play. George does not think this is kind or right, so she sticks a sign on Jeff’s back saying “Jerk!” When Jeff finds out, he turns around and punches George in the stomach which causes George to projectile vomit all over Jeff! This part is fun and I like the revenge George gets on the mean boy. Another part that is interesting is when Kelly offers her girly clothing to George for their trip to the zoo with Kelly’s grandfather. This makes George feel so happy and comfortable in her own skin. When Kelly said for George to wear her clothing… girl clothing, George said, “Are you sure?” I feel glad that George felt so good at the zoo.

I really enjoyed this book. The book taught me that it is ok to be different and the most important lesson is to be true to yourself. Another reason why I loved this book is it teaches the importance of good friendship.  Without good friendship, Kelly and George would not have come together to craft a way for George to play the part too. Kelly put herself in George’s shoes and wanted to make her friend happy. I would absolutely recommend this book. It has a powerful message for everyone to learn. This book is unique to me because I have never read about being transgender and the struggles that come with it. I rate this book with 5 starts which means I loved it and would want to read it again!

The Invisible Day, By Marthe Jocelyn

This book is called The Invisible Day by Marthe Jocelyn. It is about a girl named Billie who finds a makeup bag in Central Park. When she tries to put the makeup on, she realizes she becomes invisible. Billie and her best friend, Hubert make it their mission to make her reappear again through one big adventure in New York City.

Billie is curious, determined, and clever. She is curious because when she first sets eyes on the makeup bag, she can’t stop wondering about it until she finally opens it up and tries out the mysterious makeup. Bille is determined. She works hard to figure out how to become visible again. She is told that the juices from chewed up gum will help to make her reappear. Bille chews and chews and chews. Together with Hubert, the friends keep chewing until they have plenty of gum juice. Lastly, Billie is very clever. She is clever because when Billie reappears, she crafts a story so good that it convinces her family and the police that her backpack was taken by a thief and she was on a mission to get it.

One important and interesting part is when Billie has to step into a bath of crushed crackers and chewed gum juice in the dark. That was the only way that she could become visible again. This part was interesting because it made me think, “Wow! What if I tried to do that!? It might work!” Another interesting part is when Billie was walking by a kid and a grown-up. Billie threw out a banana peel, but she was invisible. The kid called, “Daddy daddy daddy! There is a banana peel floating around!” This was interesting because it made me think, “Does Billie know that there is a kid who might see her throwing this out?” Another funny and interesting part was when Billie was in the bathroom and she was invisible. Two girls came in and Billie heard them talking about her. They didn’t know she was there since she was invisible. This part was funny and interesting because Billie heard all of what they were talking about and she was just trying to get her backpack without them hearing her!

I enjoyed this book. The first reason I enjoyed it is because it was really awesome and every chapter ends with a cliffhanger. It is one of those books that makes you want to read more because you think, “I really want to know what happens next in the book!” Another reason I enjoyed it is because in the book, it is a combination of fantasy, adventure, and realistic fiction. It’s a really good kids book because it’s not too long and it is really interesting. I would recommend this book because if you like adventure and science, you will definitely like it. Also, in the book you meet a lot of different characters and they have different personalities. One character is really funny and you wouldn’t expect it. This book is so unique because it is really just an awesome book about being invisible. It really shows you that if you are determined to succeed at doing something, you can always do it with hard work. I would give this book a five star rating because I could just read it over and over again and still love it every single time.

The Twits By, Roald Dahl

This book is called The Twits by Roald Dahl.  It is about a couple who is very mean, silly and ugly.  The main characters are Mrs. Twit and Mr. Twit. They like to do pranks on each other and are very nasty to animals and humans. They can do some very funny things to each other, but they are still married. I think that is how they show their love. This story takes place at Mr. and Mrs. Twit’s home. The book was written in 1980, but it still relevant today.

Mr. Twit is very hairy, dirty, and cruel.  He is hairy because when he has negative thoughts, his hair grows.  Since he has so much hair, Mr. Twit always seems to get food stuck in both his big beard and his gross, crooked teeth. He is dirty because Mr.Twit never uses a napkin and would rather wipe his mouth with his sleeve or his pants.  Mr. Twit is the most cruel character I have ever read about. He creates a plan to cut down the legs of Mrs. Twit’s chair to make her think that she is shrinking.  He also forces monkeys to stand on their heads for days!

One of the most interesting parts of the book is when all of the animals that Mr. Twit tries to hurt glue the house upside down to get back at the Twits. They do this because the Twits are not being nice to them and they want to trick the mean Twits. Another interesting part is when the kids get stuck in the tree with glue and they have to take off their pants to get out.  Mr. Twit thinks that if he puts glue on the tree then birds will get stuck and he can catch them for dinner. The last interesting part is when Mr. Twit puts a frog in Mrs. Twit’s bed. This causes Mrs. Twit to screech at the top of her lungs. Mr. Twit and Mrs. Twit are always trying to outdo each other’s pranks.

This book was a very enjoyable book because I love all the funny stories, and if you like funny pranks then this book is for you.  My favorite part was when the boys were stuck in the tree and they had to take their pants off to get out of the tree. This book was really fun with so many silly parts.  It will make you laugh and you will not want to put it down. You might also want some ideas for pranks and this book will give you a lot of them. The Twits does not remind me of anything because there is nothing like it. I would rate this book five stars because it is one of the best books I have ever read.

Wolves Cashing Man

An important event that happened was when the wolves were running through a man riding a horse. While this was happening the horse was walking slowly even though the rider was scared. This scene was important because the rider’s life was at risk and the horse stayed calm which made him be alive.
