Spirit Animals book 3 Blood Ties by Garth Nix and Sean Williams

imgres

The book that I will do my review on is called Spirit Animals book 3 Blood Ties. The authors are Garth Nix and Sean Williams. It is located in the world of Erdas which is completely fiction and the time I would say is in the 1200s. The main characters are, Conor, Meilin, Abeke, Rollan, and Tarik. The main problem is that the devourer has risen and is trying to conquer Erdas.

The devourer has risen again and the quest for talismans has begun. with the talismans of the great beasts, the devourer is unstoppable. Can the greencloaks prevent that from happening? read spirit animals to find out.

An event that changed the direction of the story is that Meilin ran off away from the others and made them try to get the Slate Elephant talisman without her. Meilin made a big decision to run off and find her long lost father one of the five highest generals in her country Zhong. It was a big decision because her spirit animal Jhi the great panda advised against it. The problem with the devourer was never resolved because even though the devourer made an appearance in the battle for the Slate elephant, he ran away from the battle once he was injured. “the crocodile turned and streaked away with astonishing speed.” page 179.

I enjoyed the book because there are 2 different stories in one. Meilin trying to find her father and the greencloaks quest to the great beast Dinesh’s temple. I also liked the intense part when Abeke and Conor try to get the banana gourds. I lastly liked the part when the rhino riders knock everyone unconscious. I think people who read Percy Jackson would like this book because the story is like Percy Jackson’s story. I rate this book 4 stars.

Darke by Angie Sage

My book is called Darke. The author is Angie Sage. It is the sixth book in a series called Septimus Heap. The series is about a boy who has adventures and this book is fiction because it has magic. The setting is mainly in a castle near a river and a palace, I think the time is in medieval times because of knights and queens. The main characters are Septimus Heap and Jenna. If you want to read the series the first book is called Magyk. The plot in this is a character called Merrin Meredith tries to disrupt life in the castle by making a darke domaine spread in the castle. He makes it spread by using things to carry and spread the darke domaine within the castle. Everyone in the castle tries to prevent this.

About Septimus Heap: he is the 7nth son of a 7nth son which means he is extra magical. He is apprenticed to the extraordinary wizard and his eyes are green. His hair is straw colored curls. He likes a lot of the stuff no one else likes, like fizzfroot.

About Jenna: she has a dead mom. Her dad always seeks treasure. Adopted by Silas and Sarah Heap. She hates being safe.

The Meaning of Maggie by Megan Jean Sovern

For Maggie Mayfield, turning eleven means one year closer to college, 1 year closer to voting, and one year closer to getting a tattoo. In her family she has a dad, mom, and two older sisters. Maggie is in a constant fight with Tiffany, one of her sisters.  She really likes unhealthy things too. She also is great friends with her dad who share a lot of ice cream. And other candies and sweets together.  This book is, The Meaning of Maggie, by Megan Jean Sovern. The setting is 1988, in Atlanta. The main character is Maggie, who eats so much candy and unhealthy stuff to me she seems a little fat (ok maybe a little more than a little, but you get the idea.) The book is about Maggie’s life and her dad who has MS which my mom is currently studying, it targets the neurons and when that happens you lose control over a lot of functions of your body, for example, you might have trouble moving your arms. (if you read the book, you will find out what it means, MS.)

Maggie is nice, she helped her sister Layla with her homework. Maggie is also sensitive, she gave her family the silent treatment for about a week because she felt excluded because her family didn’t tell her dad’s sickness, MS. Maggie is finally smart, when she was ten she got an A in every subject except Gym, at least that is what I think because she sounds really bad at it later in the book.

The sad thing in this book, A.K.A. the plot, is that Maggie’s dad has MS

One interesting part is gym class, I wanted to read on to see if Maggie would be able to run the whole mile that they needed to run. Another interesting part is the last page, it just gives you more Questions, so I don’t recommend reading the last three pages, not really, but it does give you more questions. Also, another part I liked was that at the gym part it teaches good pointers about running. The end was also interesting because she did this: —– —- —- —- — — —, of course I won’t tell you what that means, you need to read the book yourself. Over the story, Maggie changed, at first she thought that fighting MS meant finding a cure, but at the end, she realized that helping her dad and being with him meant fighting MS. Maggie also helped her dad by not leaving him alone when she could go to the cafeteria with her mom and sisters.

One thing I really like about this book is that it leaves more questions at the end, I cannot compare it to any other book I have ever heard of. I like the author’s writing style because it leaves questions at the end. I recommend it to everyone because in this book, there are a lot of ways to enjoy it while learning about MS. I rate it 4 and a half stars.

Kiki Strike, Inside the Shadow City, by Kirsten Miller

Alon

I chose to review a book that I really liked and read a lot , as much as I could every night, and it was really interesting. I actually couldn’t stop reading it. This book is called Kiki Strike, Inside the Shadow City by Kirsten Miller. It is part of a series of three books called Kiki Strike. This book is about 6 delinquent girls who find an underground city beneath New York City. All of the girls have abilities that they use to help them explore the underground city, also which they call “The Shadow City.” The main characters are the delinquent girls: Ananka (the storyteller), Betty, Deedee, Oona, Luz, and Kiki Strike. The setting is NYC, I don’t know exactly which time period though. It does seem like modern day though.

The main message of this book is that things don’t appear as they seem. Kiki is mysterious, brave, confusing, and clever. Kiki knows multiple languages and Martial Arts In the book, until the end, nobody knows where Kiki lives and who her mom and dad are.   “ It took three men to take her down, but since they were all burly men, eventually they took her down because she was short.” ( Kiki is 4 feet tall, well, a little more to be honest). “ The poster said she was in Hong Kong, but it also seemed the job Betty’s parents got described Kiki (that meant she was in NYC)”. The book itself was really interesting, but one of the most interesting and important parts of the book was when they first discovered “The Shadow City” because without that there would be no story. The story is based on “The Shadow City” and how the delinquent girls discovered it and protected it from villains and other people. They wanted to keep it secret. The second most interesting part was when they all got kidnapped.  I really wanted to hang on and see what happened next in those parts. The third interesting and shocking part is when you find out Kiki’s true background. I really enjoyed that part because it was so interesting to see, what happens next.

I really enjoyed this book because of the urge that I had to keep reading, not many books have that, and it was really hard to stop reading. I also really enjoyed this book because of the constant focus on adventure and not on a lot of other parts of it. Like Ananka and the main characters life. I would recommend this book to people who like adventure because this series is about constant adventure. Another reason I recommend this book is because it is rare to find this type of author who writes books of this kind, the type that focuses on adventure more than telling a story of casual life. In addition, this book is about girls who are heroes, and not many other authors choose girls to be the main heroes of an adventure book. I think this book relates to no other book that I know of. I would rate this book 5 stars but I wouldn’t want to read it again because I know what happens.

The Prophet of Yonwood

url

I chose this book because I enjoyed the first 2 books in the series The City of Ember. The author’s name is Jeanne Duprau, and the name of my book is The Prophet of Yonwood. The book is about Nickie who wants to accomplish three goals; something good for the world, fall in love, and not let her family sell her grandfather’s building. The main problem is a war is about to happen between America and the Phalanx Nations. The setting is Yonwood in America. The time is around the twenty-first century. Grover is another kid Nickie meets who studies snakes. He wants to study to become a herpetologist but he doesn’t have money to go to study this subject.

The main character is Nickie, who is adventurous, brave, and caring. Nickie is caring because she played a lot with Otis, her grandfather’s dog. Nickie is adventurous because she went downstairs to see what the clanging noise was.  Nickie hoped to achieve her goal #1,2, and 3. Nickie sent Grover $375, because Grover did not have money to study about snakes. Grover became a herpetologist and discovered a new type of snake that had a chemical that could be used as a powerful painkiller. Grover only became a herpetologist because Nickie gave him $375. Nickie was worried about the war. The president’s deadline was 1 day from war. The war didn’t happen in the end because the president stopped it. Nickie really misses her dad, who is working for the government on a secret mission. At the end of the book, she finds out where her dad is. This book also explains a lot about Ember: how it was created, why it was created and where it was created. Nickie’s dad was involved in the creation of Ember. The most interesting part was the end of the book where we got a glimpse to the future, and found out that the city of Ember was needed 50 years later.

I enjoyed the book because it has lots of cool things. It also has code that Nickie figures out where her dad was. It is very interesting because the prophet occasionally says things that came from her vision. The vision was a future glimpse.   I would recommend this book to people who have read the other two books, because it explains a lot of things about the city of Ember. A connection to life:  I have lived where there was a war before, and I am also interested in snakes like Grover. I would rate this book 5 stars but I wouldn’t want to read it again because I know what happens. I also don’t want to reveal a lot of information about the book, because I don’t like spoiling books for other people.

The Blood Of Olympus by Rick Riordan

Blood-of-Olympus-feature-image

My book is called The Blood of Olympus. The author is Rick Riordan. The main characters are Piper, Jason, Leo, Percy, Annabeth, Hazel, Reyna, Nico, Frank, and Coach Hedge.  The main characters are trying to keep Gaea (the evil person) from waking.

The book takes place in different places at different times. I don’t know when this book was happening.  Some of the places are: Greece, Delphi, and Long Island. The Roman and Greek camps are fighting each other on Long Island.

The plot is to wake Gaea and take over the world. Gaea is the earth goddess.  By waking Gaea they are waking a primordial goddess. Gaea is a primordial goddess who wants to take over the world. The Giants (Gaea’s children) are trying to wake Gaea.  The Giants are Gaea’s children. Gaea has 2 groups of children, The Titans, and the Giants. Gaea favors the Giants over the Titans. The Titans are annoyed at the giants and Gaea. The Titans lost their leader Kronos.

The main characters (the group of demigods) make a big decision by letting Reyna take the statue of Athena to Camp Half -Blood.  Reyna is Roman which means they won’t trust her as much (they are Greeks).  It is a big decision because Reyna might betray them.

The main characters are trying to prevent that by destroying the Giants who are trying to wake Gaea.  The problem is that if Gaea wakes she will be nearly impossible to destroy. Also, Giants are immortals and only a god and a demigod working together can destroy one. And if they destroy one it is only temporary until the Giant will revive.

I enjoyed the book because of the intense moments. For example “the Giants had gotten the blood they need to awake Gaea and the ritual was ending.”  “Gaea was destroying the camps by sinking demigods into endless pits.”  “The demigods and satyrs were surrounded by  monsters.”  I would recommend this book to people who like stuff that is intense and fantasy because this book is very intense and has fantasy . I would give this book five stars. I couldn’t really stop reading it.
