(:WARNING DON’T READ THIS REVIEW IF YOU HAVE NOT READ THE FIRST BOOK:)
Catching Fire is the sequel to The Hunger Games and is by Suzanne Collins. It is about a place called Panem with a place called the Capitol and 12 (or maybe 13) districts. The hunger games is when a male and a female gets reaped from their district to fight each other to the death and the people who got reaped from the other districts. The reaped people are called tributes. Being reaped means you get picked to be in the hunger games. The tributes from district 12 in the 74th hunger games is Peeta Mellark and Katniss Everdeen. They’re mentor for the games is Haymitch Abernathy. Katniss’s best friend who despises the Capitol is named Gale Hawthorne. Peeta and Katniss win the hunger games and become victors. they are also about to become mentors when the Quarter Quell happens. The Quarter Quell is a special hunger games that happens every 25 years. For the 75th hunger games the victors are to be reaped from their district and fight. Now Katniss’s chances of surviving are even slimmer. When you are reading the book you will uncover all different secret/surprise characters. When Peeta and Katniss are reaped again they hear hints of rebellion spreading around Panem. I enjoyed the book dearly because I simply just could not put it down.
I would rate it 1 stars for people who cannot handle gruesome scenes. And 5 stars for people who can handle gruesome scenes and understand every single thing that is happening on the page. My favorite part of the book is when Katniss makes a jaw-dropping performance in the training area with her bow and arrows. My least favorite part is probably when a poisonous fog starts chasing the tributes. Again, as mentioned, I would really like to recommend this book to people with a tough stomach.
Fun Facts
Haymitch won his games on a Quarter Quell when they put twice the amount of tributes into the arena.
Peeta had a crush on Katniss since he was five.
I want to read it so badly!!!
I mean that series.
Hopefully your parents will let you read the series soon.
Two (one big) spoilers. I’m on the first book and I think telling us who won is a pretty big spoilers.
He said not to read it if you had not read the first book!
Why a tough stomach. My brother read it and he has a soft stomach. Plus it’s really not that gruesome, compared to war these days.
Too many things that give stuff away. What’s the Quarter Quell?????!?!!?
Oliver,
It is clear you love this book. And the way that you gave it two different ratings is fascinating!
But I agree with Wyatt – you gave way too much away. In fact, Jake even went in and edited out some of the things you wrote. The number one rule for these reviews is NO SPOILERS.
Other suggestions —
– Break long paragraphs into shorter paragraphs.
– Maybe not do the Fun Facts section. It seems like it would be too easy to fall into the trap of giving spoilers in that part.
– Reread your work for proper grammar before posting it please.
Finally, there are many adults who think that fourth graders should not be reading this series of books. What do you (or any fourth grader reading this comment) think of this idea?
Well, I actually felt that, if you can handle the violence and pressure, which many can, I think it is fine for 4th graders, I also think that kids are free to read what they want, even though some adults may not like this particular series
Agreed
Good job!
It’s not that gruesome because it’s a book, it’s not like you actually see people getting killed
You do see that.
Actually Beckett, you do see it, it all plays through in your mind. Remember reading is thinking.
Also, if you saw the movie then you see parts of the movie when you are reading the book.
About the poisonous frog it should just be a giant mutated frog. Then it would be my favorite part.
It’s fog. The poisonous fog.
Even though I am done with the 1st book, it still gives spoilers. For the 2nd book. Anyways, it was a good review.
???????
I mean I think I’m ready but my mom doesn’t. I know some kids are reading Divergent and at the book fair I wanted to get it but in that situation she had a point I didn’t know what divergent meant so it would be a bad book for me to read. But here I think I could read this book. And the comments do say that if you can handle the pressure you can read it and I think that I can. All of you guys are saying that it’s such a good series that I feel like I kind of have to read it because everyone that I’ve asked has said that they loved it and recommended it to me so I’m kind of upset that I can’t read it.
READ IT!!! BEST SERIES EVER!!!!! Just on askin’.
… just keep on asking 😐
I do not no if my parents will let me or not but I will do it anyway.
I just finished, it’s amazing
I really want to read them I will start soon!
Kaya says you can’t handle it, but if you think you can handle it, read it, it’s great!
I also would not tag this as realistic fiction. Technically it’s a dystopia.
Stacy, do you think that it’s a good book for kids our age to be reading?
Hi Harvey. Honestly, I think this is a book that was written for teenagers. There are many nuances regarding class structure, the government etc that more life experience will give insight to. I think we will be having a discussion about readers advisory (recommending books) sometime soon.
Good point. Makes sense too.
MENT for, I think that if you feel you are ready for, you SHOULD read it.
Its like harry potter Beckett read that whole series in first grade!
I did it too!
He started on the first day and ended on the last!
