What is the process of writing a song like for a beginner?

I’ve been reading my book and listening to a few podcast episodes from a series called Song Exploder. This book, Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon has taught me a few tricks that shaped my process later on. It taught me to stop making excuses on why to not get started and just to do something. It taught me that every new idea really is just a remix of one or previous ideas which makes me feel a little better because then if I wrote something truly horrible, it is still a remix of what someone else has done. It taught me that you’re only as good as what you surround yourself with and that you should write from what you know. It also taught me that as soon as you find something beautiful or that you like, to record it or write it down asap. This book definitely had a big influence on my process and small things I started doing, or small things I started thinking about.

The podcast, Song Exploder taught me a lot too and gave me a better ear in general. I listened to a few episodes that had artists I liked that came to this podcast like Tame Impala, Fleetwood Mac, Gorillaz and Weezer. What happens in these episodes is artists break down their songs and go into depth with what made them do this and that. What I noticed was that each artist had a process of their own and one said the more you write, the better it gets which as simple as it is, is something I needed to hear.

Both of these sources have helped me learn more about music in general through a different lens and more about the process each artist goes through when creating their own work.
