CR3 – Reflect On Your Essential Question

Now that I’m three weeks into the senior project experience, some things I’ve noticed are:

Scheduling my time is TOUGH

I’ve been writing music a bit different than usual

…Singing is tough!

As senior project has worn on, scheduling my time / day has gotten a whole lot tougher for me. I find myself waking up later than I mean to sometimes, and then taking extra time out of my day to do… nothing, really. I think it’s a symptom of quarantine – just a general boredom that’s set in that makes it a whole lot harder to do the things I want to, like senior project. Despite that, Dominic and I still get work done, but it’s something worth noting and keeping an eye on in the coming weeks.

As for my songwriting, it’s been a bit different than it’s usually been. This makes complete sense to me actually, it’s something I expected and I’m honestly pleasantly surprised with. To start, Dominic and I have got fairly different music tastes. We still like a lot of the same artists, but what he LOVES is generally different than a lot of what I LOVE. still we can agree on certain artists profusely, so when I’ve been writing demos for us to work on, I’ve been (consciously to a certain degree) trying to make them in the style of those artists that we both love. It’s taken me places that I usually don’t end up when I write music for myself, and it makes me wonder what collaborating more often could do for my songwriting.

Finally, singing – I knew it would be tough, but I’ve been having a bit of writer’s block regarding singing lately. The added aspect of an audience that will listen to these songs eventually has made me a bit more self conscious – I can’t just sing anything now, I’ll tell myself. All of a sudden I’m actually aware of whether a note I hit is too loud, or flat, or sharp, or just out of place generally. My solution for now has been caking the vocals in effects, but I’d like to eventually get to the point where I’m confident enough in myself and my voice to make the vocals more bare.

That’s all for now – so far, despite what’s above I think the project has been running fairly smoothly so far, and I’m excited to see what we end up with by the end.
