What is the process of writing a song like for a beginner?

I have discovered that I start getting lazy and procrastinating as soon as I start to lose confidence in what I’m doing. There are many tips and tricks that I’ve discovered when working that were a key part of my growth. I had to stop worrying so much about what people would say and remember that the only person you really need to worry about liking what you did is yourself. Doing some writing exercises! My teacher Bess made me do some creative writing exercises, metaphor exercises, freewriting etc. which helped a lot with getting some ideas flowing for what I wanted to write. It’s important to base yourself off of what you know. Even though this may seem more like personal work than anything else, I read a lot of things I wrote in the past, whether that be a month ago or 4 years ago and it made me learn a bit more about myself. There was something really strange about going back to what I had written when I was younger and seeing the things that mattered to me enough to write about them. One was about my brother eating my snacks and the next was about a boy who “broke my heart” at the age of 10. Some were funny, some weren’t but it got me laughing at myself which made me realize maybe I’ll be laughing at what I did during this project in a few years. This made me realize that doing your best might not mean being the best. Another small thing I realized I should keep doing is working in longer periods. Being quarantined has definitely made it harder for me to wrap my head around working so whenever I do start, it’s important that I keep on going since it may take me a bit to start again. Overall, I’ve learned that the process of a beginner is specific to the person but there are definitely a few tips and things to do to make the process smoother, faster and better.
