On December 11th, my group traveled on the subway to 39th street to the offices of Empowered By You, an organization that makes their money through their underwear sales. We met up with Charlotte who took us into a super modern, colorful, conference room to explain to us the company. I was shocked to hear that they had their merchandise in over 170 locations but only had 3 full time employees. We learned about micro financing which is the backbone to how the company works. 20% of the profits made from the underwear go to women around the world who want to start businesses to support their family such as sewing, restaurant owner, food, and clothing sales. The reason that they chose to give it to women was because it was proven that men spend money more quickly after earning while women tend to save it and put it towards their family. Then she showed us more of the fashion side of their company including fabrics and other companies that they worked with to create lines. Charlotte asked us about our project and asked how we found out about the company. Being the one who found out about them, I told her that story. She took us on a tour on the gorgeous offices. When we walked in, we thought that the company must have been huge because of it popularity and office size. Charlotte told us that the office spaces were used for hundred of different start-up companies. One thing that I have found fascinating that I have learned from doing all of these different field works and meeting all of these people who have made a difference, is how little people are involved in one large company. It really shows how one person can make a huge difference. If that isn’t inspirational, I don’t know what is.
